Discover What’s New at the Palm Springs Cultural Center

Lights, Culture, Action!

The Palm Springs Cultural Center incubates, produces and encourages arts and cultural programs in order to leverage the unique power of creativity to open minds, bridge what divides us, and discover what connects us. The programing includes film festivals, farmers’ markets, liver performances, art installations and lecture series, among other events.

For those that may remember, the Palm Springs Cultural Center is housed in what was known as Camelot Theatre.  Owned by Ric and Rozene Supple, they gifted the property to the Palm Springs Cultural Center in 2017.

Tim Rains handles public relations for the Palm Springs Cultural Center, an organization that truly lives up to its name. Situated squarely at the intersection of entertainment and community, this mainstay of arts and activities is a beacon of great times.

Film & Theatre

“At our very core, we have our film program and it’s always been essential to the Palm Springs Cultural Center,” says Tim Rains, the PR Manager for the Center.  “We still have the original really, really big screen. You know, it’s one of the biggest screens in the valley.”

Camelot Theatre header

Films are screened throughout the year in a variety of formats from traditional, to sing-a-long, to virtual. The Center is also the main screening location for the Palm Springs ShortFest and the Cinema Diverse. They are introducing a new modern contemporary director series called Palm Springs Rewind. Each month it focuses on a contemporary director.

Tim beams as he bandies names like Tarantino, Wes Anderson and the Coen brothers before continuing, “We’re one of the only theaters in the valley that do show the independent films, and to come out and see them. It’s an opportunity to see things from foreign countries that may not hit the major releases. We really go out of our way to try to secure a lot of the LGBTQ+ films.”

Tim’s philosophy is that entertainment shouldn’t just be passive. “Taking a little leap of faith from film to slightly more interactive experiences, we do have the Summer Sing-Along series,” he says. “We’re partnering with the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus. So, it’s a benefit for both of us. And this year we’re adding a social hour.”

A new film program this summer is Movies in the Park, which takes place at the new downtown park in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum. They begin at sundown, or around 8pm. This is a free event. Check for dates.

Live Music & Concerts

Harmony swells in his soul as the topic turns to concerts. “If I had to say anything that really blossomed this last year, it’s our music program… people can come for happy hour upstairs in the VIP lounge from 5:00 to 7:30 pm, and enjoy quality live music from talented musicians. One of the unique things about this town, and that people may not be aware, is that there are legends that have retired here and they’re just looking to hang out and play music. And the quality, I’m blown away by some of the quality of entertainment we provide.”

Martini’s and Moxie

On Monday’s, the Mon Petit Salon is a musical space that offers an eclectic mix of improvised world music. Rains singles out Jeremie Levi Samson in particular. “He is a master violinist. He is a virtuoso. If you ever hear him play, it’s like water on strings. And his talent is incredible.” Samson plays a style of gypsy jazz and often pairs with guest artists. “If you ever want to be blown away and just have a transcended experience, just come, listen to them play.”

Supporting Artists

As your ears caress the multitude of mirthful sounds swirling through the Cultural Center, don’t forget to feast your eyes! The visual arts pulse with perfection throughout the space, and Rains is eager to emcee their triumphant appeal.

“The latest art exhibition is Tysen Knight. He’s a beloved artist of Palm Springs. He’s responsible for a lot of the benches downtown. And so, we’re going to be showcasing his latest work, which is called Masterpiece Mashup. He takes Picasso and other artwork like that, and does a graffiti, street version of them. And we’re going to show two of his documentaries to talk about it. One for the opening reception at beginning of July and one for the closing reception. But people can come anytime during the month of July and come upstairs to our VIP lounge and check out his phenomenal artwork. I mean, you’ve probably sat upon his artwork (colorful benches) when you’re downtown.”

Mildred’s Cafe

And what’s more social than sipping on your favorite adult beverage? “We have a full bar. We have our Mildred’s Café happy hour menu, which has all the comfort foods you could possibly love… I will say this: having had a lot of fries in the valley, we do have the crispiest fries.”

Noshing is natural at another Cultural Center collaborative initiative, a group called Among Friends, “Which is like Rocky Horror style interactive films.” Fans can indulge in foodie events themed to the film and, more importantly, they can croon along with the mayhem and musicals playing on the big screen. “There’s just nothing quite like being in a theater when everyone’s singing,” Tim exclaims.

Cocktails and Karaoke in Palm Springs

By Kevin Perry

How well can you carry a tune, on a scale of one to Sinatra? Even if you can’t match Ol’ Blue Eyes in tone, you can find plenty of pitch perfect Palm Springs entertainment worthy of the Rat Pack.

Open your heart to the open-mic shenanigans of karaoke throughout the week. RetroRoom Lounge offers daily themes with cocktails to match. For example, get spicy on the scene and then cool your palate with authentic Mexican libations. It’s Tequila Tuesday! Or enjoy classic rock paired with vintage beverages on Throwback Thursdays. Regardless of the night, RetroRoom does it right!

RetroRoom Lounge

If you like your drinks as strong as your vibrato, then park it at Streetbar. Sip on a signature Maker’s Mark Manhattan as the local talent charms your pants off. Sunday through Wednesday, they’re flexing their pipes for your benefit, plus they recently added a special Saturday karaoke event that you simply must experience, darling. A down-home drag queen named Aunt Lyla concocts original songs as the bar staff keeps your cup brimming with stiff drinks. Innuendo ahoy!

Tuesday Never Sounded So Good

And now that your vocal cords are warmed up, ignite the night at Fireside Lounge. Every Tuesday at 9pm, this sporty sass factory churns out hits galore. To add fuel to the flames, try one of their custom cocktails – we’re thinking Bloody Mary’s packed with protein in the form of bacon and shrimp. They’re not just for breakfast anymore! Fireside Lounge is a truly tremendous tucked-away establishment, but don’t let their unassuming nature fool you. The clientele is immensely outgoing, so pull up a chair and croon like you just don’t care! This is a bit hidden even for locals.

But wait: that Tuesday timeslot is smoking hot. The Village also amps up at 9pm, so you’ll need to make some ch-ch-ch-ch-choices. Nestled harmoniously in the heart of downtown, The Village offers robust rib-sticking fare to rev you up for your karaoke performance. Try their Pub Margarita and/or Hibachi Tilapia. Also, don’t turn your back on the Truffle Mac! Order a bucket of beers for you and your besties and sing, sing, (chicken) wing the night away!

The Village

Oh, but your options don’t end there. If you want to get a jump on the Tuesday night festivities, bag a spot at Hunters. Their karaoke proceedings start around 8:30 and go until midnight, so it’s the ideal stage to bookend your bravura tour. And every superstar deserves an equally sublime sipper, so try the Spicy Margarita, if you dare. Or slurp down Jell-O infused with booze. How else will you muster up more courage for your next triumphant tune?

Mid-Week Shenanigans

You survived Tuesday. Congrats! You must celebrate immediately. Put some hip in your happy hour every Wednesday starting at 6pm. V Wine Lounge is toasting to your talent, so join the party. Despite the name, this enchanting establishment offers so much more than vino. Explore their specialty drink menu and discover a dazzling selection of martinis. For example, the Orange Crush blends mandarin vodka with a hint of soda and cranberry juice. If your sweet tooth is even more ravenous, bite into the Jolly Rancher Martini, made with raspberry liqueur, fresh lime juice and triple sec cascading over a foundation of raspberry vodka. You’ll be sufficiently satiated by the time you belt out your song(s) of choice. Karaoke ends at 9pm, so sing early and rest up for whatever’s next!V wine bar Karaoke

Karaoke Hot Spots

Much like your singing skills, many events in Palm Springs are hidden. Tonga Hut has its own secret space where special gatherings often bubble up unexpectedly. This tiki stronghold has been known to set sail with a combination of words that’s already music to our ears: Yacht Rock Karaoke Night! And if you like the sound of that, you should try their fierce and fruity mélange of cocktails. Starting with a base of homemade hibiscus syrup, the Tonga mixologists can whip up an array of deliciousness, most notably their Mojave Punch. It’s a knockout!

OK, it’s time to ditch the training wheels. You’re a pro now! Palm Canyon Roadhouse proudly eschews the term karaoke in favor of open mic, so there’s no prompter serving as your backup band. You need to know the lyrics cold! And speaking of cold, the Roadhouse is stocked with the chillest pours in town, so drink up and get down! Karao—oops, we mean open mic night is every Sunday from 5pm to 10pm.

Palm Canyon Roadhouse

It’s time to get into the groove. The beat has begun, the stage is set, and your star is on the rise. Catch it! Karaoke and cocktails await in Palm Springs.

What’s New at the Palm Springs Air Museum

Lift Your Spirits at the Air Museum

By Kevin Perry

As the temperature rises, so does our appetite for adventure. Our eyes gaze up at Palm Springs’ manicured landscaping, then further to the majestic San Jacinto Mountains, and finally at the perfect summer skies above. Humankind has always strived to conquer the clouds; after all, what could be cooler than that? No one understands the art of elevation and the thrill of aviation better than the Palm Springs Air Museum. If you’ve ever visited before, then you understand the grandeur of its exhibits.

But when was your last trip to the Air Museum? Because it has a fleet of new surprises ready to whisk you away!

palm springs air museum

“We’ve added the Miles Hangar,” announces Fred Bell, the museum’s Vice Chairman. Named for Major General Kenneth P. Miles, the sacred space honors those who served in Korea and Vietnam, but it also commemorates non-combat phenomena like the Cold War.

“We’ve added probably 10 aircraft over the last five years,” Bell continues. “There’s a lot to see and do. It’ll take four to six hours to get through the museum.” That’s four to six hours of air-conditioned splendor and spaciousness to spare.

“We have 91,000 feet under roof now,” narrates Bell, “on 10 acres. We have exhibits outside, as well.”

Up Close and Personal with a F-117

But let’s focus on the inviting chill of the indoor exhibits for now, shall we? The Air Museum recently added a new wing (pun intended) of construction to its already impressive sprawl. The Jim Houston Pavilion ushers guests from sea level to an experience that is truly out of this world.

“About four years ago, we were approached by the United States Air Force, that was retiring F-117 stealth fighters. That’s one of the most advanced aircraft in the Air Force inventory. They had been in hibernation for a while, because the F-35 had replaced it. They were going to start letting out four a year, and they wanted to know if we wanted one. One of the stipulations was: it had to be indoors.”

Bell and his crew went from zero-to-excited in record time.

“It wasn’t a lot of consternation on our part. We said, ‘Yes, we want one.’ Then, the odyssey started.”

F-117-hangar
F-117

Come See the Star of the Show

It was a journey of innovation and education. The resulting Houston Pavilion is a space-age marvel, shimmering with billowy silver drapes that transport your perspective to the far reaches of the stratosphere. “We’ve been working hard to get it finished. It’s a 5,000-foot exhibit that’s built around a stealth fighter, tail number 833. That is the second highest combat time aircraft in the United States Air Force fleet, of the stealth fighters.”

The star of the show is an accomplished vessel indeed. Its very name should be on the marquee of every multiplex!

“This particular airplane is called the Black Devil,” Bell explains. “The Iraqis called the stealth the Black Devil because they couldn’t see them at night.” But YOU must see it to believe it, which is a tall order, considering the Nighthawk’s pedigree and prowess.

“That airplane was designed to not only be not seen on radar, but it’s very hard to hear, and it’s very hard to see on the infrared spectrum. The airplane really does disappear, especially at night.”

Museum Fun Without Breaking the Bank

So, how much would YOU pay to witness this historic milestone of flight, brought conveniently down to earth in our hometown?

“The admission to stealth only costs 1.5 million dollars,” quips Bell. “I’m kidding. It’s part of the admission.”

That’s right: one affordable ticket price gains you access to the wild blue yonder of aviation excellence. Active duty personnel and their immediate family members are admitted free of charge, but that’s not all.

“We’re running our kids program,” Bell declares. “Kids 12 and under are free.”

Just in time for summer break!

But the Palm Springs Air Museum is a destination for all seasons. In fact, Fred Bell and his squad already have their sights set on the next fantastic voyage.

“We have come up with a program that will roll out in the fall, for school kids, called The Science of Stealth, about how stealth works. When you talk about stealth, there are a lot of things that go into it, that people don’t realize, from the coding on the airplane, to the shape, to the radios, to the engine exhaust.”

Kids 12 and Under Free Admission
Kids 12 and Under Free Admission

Something for Everyone

Reaching a fever pitch of reverence and revelry, Bell concludes, “We have exhibits on the men and women that were involved in the program, and all kinds of fun stuff like that.”

As they say: sun’s out, fun’s out! Bell and his flight crew are eager to welcome tourists and townies alike to the every-expanding array of attractions the museum has to offer. “We love being out here in Palm Springs. Over the summer, this is a great place to take kids for a nice visit, and for the entire family. Everybody can enjoy it.”

To vault your vacation to the next level, book a trip to the Palm Springs Air Museum. Get your head in the clouds!

See Palm Springs on a Bike

One of the great Palm Springs activities to start your day is getting the lay of the land before it starts to simmer. And the first destination on your itinerary must be Bike Palm Springs. After all, our hamlet is a work of art and inspires curiosity and connection. Get up close and personal by taking a gallery walking (or biking) tour. Up and down Palm Canyon, you will find spaces that evoke everything from the wonderful to the wild.

Jorge Mendez Gallery displays artists who celebrate the human form while juxtaposing it against a blur of colors and fracture geometry. Next door, abstraction meets photorealism in the deliriously multifaceted Rubine Red Gallery. Spoiler: you won’t be able to stop staring at the disco-ball-esque glass pillow sculptures.

George Mendez Gallery

The Desert Art Center is a glorious outlet for local artists and enthusiasts. Further down Palm Canyon, you will find the dazzling trio of Stewart Galleries, Geras Tousignant, and the Michael Weems Collection.

Palm Springs Art Museum presents spaciousness amplified. The imagery along the walls transports you to locales, real and imagined, all from the convenience of your air-conditioned surroundings. With timed ticketing and enhanced exhibits, the venerable organization has streamlined the museum-going process to avoid the pitfalls of overcrowding.

Discover Our Small Luxe Hotels

Uniquely Palm Springs

By Barbara Beckley

It’s true. Only in Palm Springs will you find so many small hotels with luxury, style and indulgence. Driven by movie and industry big shots who wanted to hideaway in lavish intimacy – and contemporary innkeepers who pair their sumptuous accommodations with luxe amenities and services. Palm Springs is big on small posh properties. From French glamor and mid-century extravagance to Mediterranean magnificence. For just the two of you or family and friends – Palm Springs offers the best in petite luxury.

Crème de la Crème

Perhaps the most elegant of Palm Springs’ small hotels is The Willows Historic Palm Springs Inn.  It began as a millionaire’s private getaway in 1925 and never looked back. Richly appointed, the Italianate style mansion has hosted legends including Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, Marion Davies and even Albert Einstein!

It was designed by the architect who designed the Los Angeles Herald Examiner building with icon Julia Morgan. Each of the 17 unique guestrooms pamper with Egyptian cotton towels, mini bars, refrigerators, and surprises – such as balconies or terraces, oversized showers and priceless antiques.

Daily Perks

Daily perks befit a country estate including a three-course gourmet sit-down breakfast in the formal dining room overlooking the inn’s 50-foot waterfall. Enjoy afternoon wine and hors d’oeuvres in the lounge and grand terrace. Iced tea is served by the heated pool and Jacuzzi and you also have access to concierge services.

Which room to choose?

Acres of terraced gardens with spectacular views of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley invite exploring. Sit on Einstein’s favorite stone bench and enjoy his favorite view (maybe channel a theorem or two). Which room to choose?

The poshest of the posh is the Marion Davies Room, where legend says the silent film star was a long-term guest in the 1950s. You’ll feel like a millionaire with its elaborately carved bed, imposing fireplace, formal sitting area, Juliette balcony overlooking the San Jacinto Mountains, and amazing bathroom suite featuring a two-person claw-foot tub, marble shower, silver chandelier and chaise lounge.

History Note: The Willows, in the 1950’s, overlooked the famous Desert Inn (this land now includes the blocks around the Art Museum, downtown park, and Kimpton Rowan hotel). Marion loved Palm Springs so much, in 1955 she purchased the Desert Inn.

Also, the Library Room wows with a coffered ceiling, Cherrywood hand-carved fireplace, garden patio, antique writing desk and bath with an antique pedestal sink and contemporary two-person shower.

Einstein often stayed in his namesake, The Einstein Room, now with Art Deco furnishings, a king bed and French doors opening onto a private garden patio with mountain views.

 Mid-Century Magic

Modernism architect legend William F. Cody went above and beyond designing L’Horizon Resort & Spa in 1952 as a private residence for Hollywood heavyweight Jack Wrather (his credits include TV classics “Lassie” and “The Lone Ranger”) and guesthouses for his VIP friends. In addition to experiencing one of Cody’s finest works – you’re luxuriating in the bungalows where celebs from Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe to Ronald Reagan and other U.S. presidents stayed and played.

Re-envisioned in 2015 by contemporary celebrity designer Steve Hermann, L’Horizon’s 25 low-slung, glass-walled bungalows ooze Mad Men opulence with high-end mid-century furnishings, marble baths, outdoor showers, Frette Linens, Le Labo toiletries and private patios. High hedges guarantee exclusivity within its three green acres of zero-edge poolside and spa splendor.

Choose the Fireplace Junior Suite Bungalow and imagine what Marilyn did. It was her personal bungalow and rumor says she loved to use the outdoor shower and cozy up by the copper-clad fireplace.

For ultimate privacy and luxe, The Residence, Wrather’s original home, has its own full-size pool, sunken seating around the mid-century fireplace, a dining room, wet bar and full kitchen. It can be a one- or two-bedroom bungalow. You’re choice.

SoPa

A new addition with the Hermann make-over is SoPa, a hip open-air restaurant. As a guest, you get to enjoy breakfast – including Breakfast Cocktails – perhaps the “Perfect Gentleman” with Bourbon and champagne – and lunch, along with dinner. Also in-room dining from the SoPa menu. (Non-guests can come for dinner only.)

The Spa

The pampering continues at The Spa, and indoor-outdoor affair, with treatments under white canvas cabanas and private outdoor showers.

Amenities & Movie Stars

Bask in old Hollywood movie star glam with ultra-modern amenities at Villa Royale, a posh retreat ever since Olympic figure skating champ Sonja Henie built it as her private estate in 1947 and hosted stars from Mickey Rooney to screen writer Irving Shulman. Book a two-bedroom Impala Villa and luxuriate in the large living room with a fully stocked wet bar, gourmet Smith Tea; private patio and bath with a glass-enclosed tile shower.

Its 38 villas sport contemporary modernism décor and eye-popping commissioned artwork.

Love your doggie? So does the villa, with pet beds, bowls, toys, treats and a list of local pet resources.

Fame & Fortune

The luxury of one of Palm Springs’ coolest night spots right on property, dreamy bungalows and soothing amenities are just the beginning at the Ingleside Estate. Set behind high hedges and anchored by Melvyn’s Restaurant and after-dinner hot spot The Casablanca Lounge; the Ingleside’s 30 rooms and suites are Palm Springs perfection.

Opened in 1922 by heirs to the Pierce Arrow Motor Company (America’s Rolls-Royce) as an “invitation only” escape, you’re sleeping where Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and the like slept and (no doubt) partied. In the ‘70s, entrepreneur Melvyn (Mel) Habor skyrocketed the restaurant and lounge to stardom as the see-and-be-seen spot for everyone from Frank Sinatra, Dinah Shore and Lucille Ball to John Travolta and hip hop star Nas.

As a guest, you enjoy exclusive breakfast at and room service by Melvyn’s Restaurant; comp cruiser bicycles, a pool, pampering at adjacent Estrella Spa and luxe accommodations with plush velvets, curated mini bars, terraces, poster beds, Frette linens, Denver mattresses and newly redone baths with two-person showers.

Book a villa and enjoy posh privacy. The Haber Suite features a living room, bedroom, two baths and French doors inside its own walled compound. Melvyn’s Suite has a living room, bedroom, two baths and a courtyard patio with plush outdoor seating.

Indulge All Your Senses

Mediterranean style on the outside, modernist minimalist on the inside, with morning pastries from Palm Springs’ most sought-after breakfast restaurant, Alcazar Palm Springs is luxury for all the senses. Its 34 unique rooms include quirky original art, Italian linens, fireplaces, private patios and pool suites.

pool and mountains

The 700-square-foot One-Bedroom Suite is among the largest with a living room; and also can be reserved as a two-bedroom, two bath suite. Or, bliss out in the poolside King Deluxe, with a private soaking tub on the private terrace. Or the second-story 210-square-foot King Room, with a cozy fireplace.

Soak and float in the garden pool. Pedal around town on complimentary Townie Bikes. There’s even a business center (if you must…). Each morning, Alcazar puts out coffee, espresso and fresh pastries from Cheeky’s, Palm Springs’ favorite breakfast restaurant, conveniently attached to Alcazar; as is sister eatery Birba, for easy evening cocktails and unusually flavorful Italian cuisine.

Celebrating 30 years at the Blue Coyote

A longtime family restaurant looks back at 30 years

By Melissa Daniels

Not every vacation destination has restaurants that have stood the test of the time. But Palm Springs has its fair share, and in uptown Palm Springs, the Blue Coyote Bar and Grill is celebrating its 30th anniversary of serving up southwest fare and memorable moments.

Known for their “wild coyote margarita” and elegant yet relaxed outdoor patio dining, the Blue Coyote is a staple visit for many Palm Springs visitors (and residence!) who come back year after year.

All In The Family

Sisters Kelle Baker and Shayne Alloway own and operate the restaurant which was started by their father Don Cavanaugh back in 1992. At that time, Baker said, it was a labor of love with family members chipping in to fund the start-up costs and help prepare the space.

On opening day, they had six tables, Baker recalls with a laugh. But word traveled fast, and soon enough it was three people deep to order a drink at the bar.

Over the years, the restaurant’s footprint has grown to encompass several patios and hold 250 seats, while the surrounding real estate has slowly filled in with other successful local spots over time. Baker and Alloway credit the longevity to their top-notch staff, about two thirds of whom have been there for over 10 years.

“We always try to make people walk out happier than when they came in,” Baker said. ”I think we stay true to that as much as possible.”

Alloway, who learned to bartend at the Blue Coyote, said she’s grateful to the recurring guests who make the Blue Coyote one of their go-to spots year after year. “We’ll get calls from people in the air, saying ‘We’re on a flight, can you get our table ready?’” she said. “We have people coming in with their suitcases.”

Make It A Wild

One surefire way to win over guests is with the wild coyote margarita: this one-of-a-kind cocktail isn’t your standard tequila and neon green mixer. Instead, it’s a rusty tone and made in large batches with a secret house recipe. In recent years, it’s been named the Best Margarita in the Coachella Valley at least twice by the reader-voted poll from CV Independent.

Blue Coyote margarita

But it would be a mistake to consider the Blue Coyote merely a watering hole. The menu includes familiar and fulfilling choices like enchiladas and fajitas plus unique and complex dishes like pollo cilantro and molcajete. The fish tacos are a fan favorite – as well as the newer “Coyote Bowl” that includes chicken, rice and beans topped with cotija, pico de gallo, guacamole and ancho chile sauce.

blue coyote tacos

Dana Frey and her husband Glenn have been customers at the Blue Coyote for nearly 20 years. She said they were drawn in by the patio’s ambiance, but kept coming back because of the great drinks, delicious food and friendly staff.

“It’s our ‘Cheers’ bar,” she said. “We’ve gotten to know the servers and the bartenders, we’ve seen them get married and have kids.”

Friendly Staff

Cesar Moreno joined the staff about three years ago and currently serves as  the general manager. He loves seeing the customers have a good time, “especially after a wild coyote margarita.”

Head chef Herbierto Aguilar has been at the Blue Coyote for more than eight years. After about three decades in the restaurant business, he says Blue Coyote is one of the best for both its cuisine and atmosphere.

seafood salad blue coyote
Seafood Salad

You might recognize him – he’s the rare chef who likes to pop into the dining room from time to time to say hello to their guests.

“I put my heart into my food every time I’m cooking,” he said. ““When you treat people like family, they come and enjoy it and they appreciate it more.”

And The Award Goes To….

One of the most memorable moments the Blue Coyote staff had in recent years was when Quentin Taratino popped in before the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January 2020. When accepted his award for “Director of the Year” that night, he name-dropped the restaurant and said he had had three Blue Coyotes.

That moment, Baker got tears in her eyes: what Taratino didn’t know was that her father had passed away the year before, and the transition had been understandably emotional and stressful one for her and her family. But in that moment, she knew that her father would be proud, and that the Blue Coyote would move on.

Loving Hospitality

Among this tight community, one longtime fixture is Don Davis. He’s been a bartender, manager and waiter there for 28 years, after Don Cavanaugh coaxed him away from the Ritz-Carlton.

“I turned him down for a year,” Davis recalls. “And then I went in there, and I thought this is a great margarita, and I had the pollo cilantro, and I was hooked. I left the Ritz and moved to the Coyote.”

He’s been through too many memorable moments to count – including one time when a bachelorette party paid him $100 to jump in the fountain – and the difficult and stressful ones too, including the lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Longtime customers helped keep the business afloat with to-go orders.

blue coyote don davis

On this side of re-opening, Davis said what makes the Blue Coyote special is not just the ambiance and the menu items, but the same loving hospitality that’s been there since Day 1.

As Don Cavanaugh taught his staff: “Treat your normal people like VIPs and treat your VIPs like normal people, and everybody will be happy.”

Giving Back

He also said that he appreciates how the family-run restaurant supports local causes. Each November, they host a Don Cavanaugh Day to raise money for the Parkinson’s Resource Organization. And they have annual fundraisers for breast cancer awareness to benefit Shay’s Warriors, a Coachella Valley-based nonprofit that supports cancer survivors.

On Sunday April 24 the Blue Coyote will host a 30th anniversary “Cheers to 30 years” celebration with specials and giveaways.
