Art Lovers’ Guide to Palm Springs

Fine art. Fun art. The world-class Palm Springs Art Museum. Renowned art galleries. Commissioned Public Art everywhere.

Now you can add “Art” to Palm Springs’ list of irresistible attractions.

Great art has the power to transform,” says Christian Hohmann, Palm Springs public art booster and second-generation fine art dealer. “Public art has transformed many cities – for example, Bilbao, Spain. Today, Palm Springs’ exceptional collection transforms it into an art mecca.”

Downtown Art & Sculpture

Newest on the Palm Springs art scene is the city’s sizeable – and growing – public art collection. Begin your viewing in Downtown. But keep an eye out. Commissioned works are all over town – decorating hotels, restaurants, shops, thrift stores. Even benches.

Like all things Palm Springs – the art scene has a celebrity connection. No. We’re not talking “Forever Marilyn,” the 26-foot-tall pop art statue of Marilyn Monroe that’s taken the selfie world by storm. (More about Her later…). Palm Springs’ public art was born out of a 1988 decree by then-mayor Sonny Bono (of Sonny & Cher fame) and creation of the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission to bring art into the city. Its first installation in 1988, the brightly colored “Rainmaker Fountain,” is still bobbing and gushing water in Frances Stevens Park at the corner of North Palm Canyon Drive and Alejo Road.

Drive a few blocks into the center of Downtown – and wow! Art has taken over. “Public art has come a long way,” enthused Matthew Lesniak, one of the seven commissioners on the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission. “We oversee a collection of more than 100 pieces now; purchased throughout the history of the commission.” Of course, the commission isn’t the only art-centric enthusiast. “Palm Springs’ dramatic light, and desert landscape has attracted artists since the early 1900s,” Lesniak explained. “And today, so many special events like Desert X and Coachella are attracting young creative types.”

A few steps away, “Forever Marilyn” poses in her billowing white skirt at the corner of Museum Way and Belardo Road, recreating one of Marilyn Monroe’s most famous images taken from Billy Wilder’s 1955 film The Seven Year Itch.

Marilyn Monroe -

Originally a temporary installation in 2012, the giant statue was so so popular, it was purchased by P.S. Resorts and other private organizations and returned June 21, 2021 to reign in glory. This is the city where legend says the super star was “discovered” at a Racquet Club pool party. Weighing in at 24,000 pounds, sculptor Seward Johnson used stainless steel and aluminum covered in a unique patina involving 10 layers of hues with a matte finish– except for her glossy lips, toe nails and pearlized glaze on her earrings – to achieve an extremely realistic look, especially in her skin tones. And the perfect backdrop for millions of selfies.

Walking to the other side of The Rowan, more artwork demands attention. Another woman – “Isabelle,” a fine art polished stainless steel sculpture – rocks a hypnotic ambiance, seemingly changing form as you move around her glimmering surface.

Created by German quantum physicist-turned artist Julian Voss-Andreae, every detail from her shifting silver hues and see-through elements make viewing an extraordinary experience. Diagonally in front of “Isabelle,” a mural of angel wings, named “Stay Human” by Colette Miller, offers a playful selfie.

The Palm Springs Art Museum

A work of art itself designed by mid-century master architect E. Steward Williams, the Palm Springs Art Museum, on North Museum Way in Downtown. It’s the must-see crown jewel of Palm Springs’ passion for art. “Palm Springs’ midcentury architecture has greatly contributed to the city’s reputation as a place of style and creative expression,” notes Scott Slaven, art museum marketing director. So the museum is a doubly perfect space for modern and contemporary works by Henry Moore, Dale Chihully, Andy Warhol, David Alfaro Siqueiros, America’s West and hundreds more.

Palm Springs Art Museum

To make the most of your visit, Slaven recommends viewing the temporary exhibitions on either side of the lobby first; then farther back to the special-focus galleries with glass works and Western and California art (often by Palm Springs early artists and movie stars). On the second floor you’ll find modern art, while the third floor showcases contemporary works from the permanent collection and special loans.

If you still have time, view the two outdoor sculpture gardens. Take advantage of the museum’s Free Thursday Nights program! Admission is free from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Curators and docents are often on hand for insightful conversation.

If you’re interested in more about Palm Springs’ incredible midcentury architecture, visit the art museum’s auxiliary location: The Architecture and Design Center five blocks away on South Palm Canyon Drive. It’s the hub of the museum’s exploration of architecture and design, and houses related exhibitions as well as educational and community programs.

 Art Beyond Downtown

Keep your hands on the wheel – and your eyes open for art! The Palm Springs art scene is truly everywhere. Driving in from LA, the colorful mural, “Woman in Glasses,” by James Haunt & Zes MSK, splashed across the side of a building at 2481-2483 North Palm Canyon Drive, announces you’ve arrived in art-land.

Up and down North Palm Canyon Drive, South Palm Canyon Drive, Indian Canyon Drive, at the Palm Springs Convention Center and elsewhere, more than 50 cement benches double as whimsical art installations – abstracts, poems, scenes like a rubber ducky in the pool.

Larger-than-life metal sculpture horses, “The Art of Taming Horses” by Christopher Myers, prance down the median along Tahquitz Canyon Way.

“Popsicles” by painted-plywood cut-out artist John Cerney (he’s the guy who creates those huge cool cut-out figures in the Central Valley), pop up from five gigantic hands at 605 Sunny Dunes Road.

And “TOT,” the three-foot stainless steel sculpture of a toddler by Richard Becker, is at the ready in yellow goggles and blue trunks at The Palm Springs Swim Center. All thanks to the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission.

Fossils of the Future is a series Tyler Burton began in 2016. Her first pieces in this series focused on the castings of plastic water bottles in porcelain and glazing them with volcanic crusty glazes. More recently, she has been incorporating the actual plastic into her art by creating large monolithic totem like structures resembling futuristic core samples of the earth. These pieces are filled with donated or found plastic and layered with rock, concrete, old paint and resin. As Public Art, they visually engage viewers with their height and color and upon closer inspection, the recognition of everyday plastic objects. And then, hopefully, a deeper conversation follows about the world we live in and how we can help preserve it.

Via Negocio Art District

Lynda Keeler, 1800 N Via Negocio, #5

Lynda’s paintings, murals, and sculptures are inspired by daily walks through California’s neighborhoods. The vivid colors of flowers in front gardens, a glimpse of a swimming pool through a side gate, the massive boulders of Joshua Tree, and the curves of a cul de sac are abstractly captured in the Road Maps and Color Maps series. She is deeply influenced by the contemporary and classic architecture and design on these walks and how the natural and built environments intersect in ways that can be in harmony or in conflict.

Julie Weiman, 1800 N Via Negocio, #5

While abstract, Julie’s work is grounded in the landscape, specifically the Mojave Desert of Southern California. She uses a range of mediums including inks and dyes, rust, graphite, soil, pencil, pastel, spray paint, acrylic and wax.

More recently, Julie is creating textile art pieces. Her textile pieces are made from material that she has collected over time, such as rugs, antique linens, garments, and lace handkerchiefs. She uses these materials as they were, respecting the age, touch, weave, and even stains.

Tyler Burton, 1800 N Via Negocio, #4

Tyler Burton is an artist who creates sculptures and installations that explore various environmental issues, such as plastic waste, shelter, glacial melt, and wildlife habitats. In her ‘Fossils of the Future’ series, she examines our dependence on single-use plastics through large layered monoliths, mini-liths, castings of plastic products, and cyanotype prints. In ‘Places: California Water,’ she looks at areas like The Salton Sea and Owens Lake, where human activities have led to the depletion, mismanagement, or theft of water with dire consequences.

Architects Who Built Palm Springs: Charles Du Bois

By Randy Garner

Since the 1920s, visionary modernist architects have designed sleek, modern homes that have embraced the desert environment. The dramatic geographic surroundings of Palm Springs inspired a design aesthetic in the middle of the 20th Century now called Desert Modernism. This post-war architecture style includes use of block walls, clerestory windows, long and low rooflines.

Each architect responded to the desert climate, sunlight, and mountain landscape differently. One of the many architects that left their stamp on Palm Springs is Charles Du Bois (1903–1996, pronounced “do bwah”)

Charles du bois with son Charles
Charles Du Bois with son Charles Jr.

Early Years

Charles was born in Rochester, NY. An uncle in Glendale, California raised him and his sister Gertrude, where he graduated from High School in 1921. He attended UCLA for a year and then transferred to MIT (1922 – 1930, intermittently). During this time, he was also working as a draftsman for a number of prominent architecture firms, including Walker & Eisen (1923-1931), Gogerty & Weyl (1926-1929), and Horatio W. Bishop (1929).

Many of the designed Du Bois was exposed to in these early years were Spanish Baroque, Spanish Colonial, and Mediterranean Revival. Ealker & Eisen went on to build the El Mirador Hotel in Palm Springs (now Desert Regional Medical Center). This may have been a connection for Du Bois to Palm Springs, but it remains speculation.

Du Bois Post War Designs

Charles passed the California and national exams in the 1930s. In 1938 he opened his own office at 5143 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, AIA records show. During WWII, when housing construction slowed, he worked as a Senior Set Designer for MGM. After the war, he lived in Encino and as housing began to pick up again, he was back designing and working with developers across southern California.

A partial list of his work in Southern California includes:

Hollywood Riviera Estates and Palos Verdes Riviera Beach Estates (Torrance)

Fairwood Estates (Granada Hills)

Santa Anita Estates (East Pasadena)

Woodland West (Woodland Hills)

Woodland West offered a glimpse of several Du Bois design hallmarks, namely Palos Verdes stone cladding double entry doors, and “casket-pull” door handles.

Palm Springs Architect Du Bois Designs

His Palm Springs homes possess many classic midcentury modern traits such as post and beam construction, vaulted ceilings, walls of glass, and emphasis on blending indoor and outdoor living.

Swiss Miss Houses (1958 – 1962)

Du Bois is well known for the Swiss Miss Houses in Palm Springs featuring the A-frame entry.

Examples include: 1133 Vista Vepero – 1958; 1110 Abrigo Road – 1958; 775 W Crescent Drive – 1958; 700, 855 Via Las Palmas – 1959; 1355 N Rose Ave – 1961.

There are 15 Swiss Miss Houses remaining.

du bois swiss miss house

These homes were built in the Vista Las Palmas neighborhood, which was undergoing development by builder Joe Dunas and the Alexander Construction Company. William Krisel had completed a number of homes with the “butterfly” roof, and flat roofs that had become more typical to the Palm Springs Desert Modern style. The builder turned to Charles Du Bois to come up with something that would distinguish them from this trend.

Du Bois designed his collection of Swiss Miss Houses as low-lying, one-story residences with a dramatic A-frame entry. The pitch can span the width of the residence, creating covered porch areas in both the front and back by the pool. The name came from its comparison to the gable roofs often found at ski chalets in Switzerland.

Another interpretation is that the roofline followed a trend for Polynesian-influenced designs, which had become popular in America and increasingly common in bars and restaurants. It would later take on the name “Tiki” as military returned from their service in the South Pacific.

Sunrise L’anai (1962 – 1964)

Du Bois and builder Joe Dunas went into partnership with the Alexanders on this project as they had on the Swiss Miss Homes. The complex encompasses 22 units in six floor plans clustered in six buildings. Many characteristics of the residences are shared stone walls beside the interior courtyard and entranceways. The design included large, shingled, two-story A-frame gables with eaves that descend almost to the ground, partially open living areas, and post and beam construction.

Las Palmas Summit (1962 – 1963)

Las Palmas Summit is a small development immediately adjacent to Vista Las Palmas. The district is composed of a single north-west street (Los Robles Dr.) and two cul-de-sacs (W Capistrano Ct, W Friar Ct). Charles Du Bois was the architect and Joseph Dunas was the developer, partner of Alexander Construction Company.

Advertisements for the homes differentiated them from other Palm Springs offerings at the time by evoking popular culture’s increasing interest in Hawaii as a vacation destination: “Where island living meets desert living, the “all seasons” home designed for year round living.” Sales agent, “Aloha-Bob Paine” was on hand to provide “Hawaiian Hospitality.”

Canyon Estates (1968 – 1973)

DeBois collaborated with developer Roy Fey in conjunction with Great-West Life Assurance Company of Canada. Construction began in the late 1960’s on raw desert next to Indian Canyons golf course.

1969 Ad, Du Bois, Indian Canyons

Du Bois was tasked with building 254 single-story family residences and a central clubhouse. His design included low-lying roofs, Palo Verde stone accents and expansive glass windows. His plans offered a choice of six floor plans and a choice of contemporary, Spanish, Polynesian and desert contemporary designs. In addition, each home offered a spacious entry, breakfast room, wet bar, a choice of three bedrooms or two bedrooms and convertible den, two baths plus powder room and double garage.

Canyon Estates was advertised as condominium homes. The Desert Sun noted it to be a $25 million project on 110 acres at the ribbon cutting in April of 1970. It included a Country Club providing the homeowners with the most magnificent and luxurious clubhouse. Roy Fey hired designer Vern Harlow and manager Ford Munn to decorate and furnish the clubhouse.

The clubhouse featured a nicely furnished lounge, complete spa and gym facilities for both men and women, card rooms, private party rooms, 9-hole executive golf course and two tennis courts. It has 15 pools.

When the homes hit the market in the early 70’s, prices started out at $48,900, which was higher than a typical residence. By the mid to late 70s, prices and skyrocketed to $145,000.

Delicious Eats

Let’s face it: visiting all the establishments above can tuck you out—hence the phrase “shop ‘til you drop.” That’s why you need the proper food to fuel your Palm Springs adventure. So let’s start with breakfast, shall we?

Uptown Goodness

Sometimes, you just want a burger and bacon. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s very satisfying. Cheeky’s is renowned as the home of the bacon flight: five festively flavored varieties of your favorite a.m. side dish, elevated to new heights of yumminess. Or indulge your sweet tooth, courtesy of their strawberry lemon loaf festooned with cream cheese frosting. Don’t forget a splash of sunshine sangria to wash it all down!  Get ready for an avalanche of flavors because we’re just getting started.

Right next door is Birba, an Italian restaurant serving handcrafted cocktails, handmade pasta, wood-fired pizza, elegant salads, and their famous gluten-free cauliflower pizza in an inviting tree-filled patio. (Note Cheeky’s and Birba’s summer closure).

1501 Uptown Gastropub is serving a half-pound 1501 Burger with tomato onion jam, cave-aged cheddar or gruyere, smoked bacon, romaine, and dill pickle on a brioche bun served with house fries or horseradish slaw. Doesn’t that sound good? Pair it with one of their craft brews or inventive beverage pairings.

Just past downtown, as you enter the Uptown Design District, is the casual restaurant Chicken Ranch, which features free-range and locally grown chicken. The menu includes their popular rotisserie chicken, sandwiches, and salads. Comport sides include thick-cut fries, rotisserie roasted yams, and a loaded baked potato. They also offer a vegetarian fried chicken sandwich.

Continue your culinary quest at Eight4Nine, which has the largest outdoor patio in the Uptown Design District. The white and pink motif  is fun and playful, creating a dining style that’s casual and elegant. The cuisines are contemporary American and continental and include seafood. It’s great for groups, with several private dining rooms.

Trio has earned its title, Where Palm Springs Eats.  This locally owned restaurant serves hearty American-style dishes like red wine braised short ribs.

Jake’s Palm Springs may be small, but it makes up for it in taste. Dine al fresco in its charming courtyard or intimate dining room and enjoy a casual, upscale European-style bistro experience. Note that it closes during the summer.

Chef Andrew Copley brings his award-winning skills to his well-established Uptown restaurant, Copley’s on Palm Canyon. Enjoy upscale American cuisine and dine under the desert’s bright stars. The menu has something for most tastes, but they are mainly known for their duck and lamb dishes. Their pound cake is also a signature.

Workshop Kitchen + Bar is also owned by an award-winning chef, Michael Beckman. In addition to luscious libations, they’re sizzling up dry-aged ribeye steaks to your specifications. The walls are concrete, and the fries are cooked in duck fat.

As she explains to her team, “We’re a gal and a couple of (really fun, really stylish) gay guys, Johnny and Thomas, here at your service. We like to make things more fun, more experiential, more real.” She’s the planner to trust, as her website states, “If you think too many cocktails at a wedding is never enough. If you feel comfortable foregoing wedding traditions that don’t make sense to you or even creating your own.”

Led by Event Designer and Culinary Artist Chad Gardner, the Dash and a Handful catering and event design company is known for creative presentation, exotic, bold spices, unique flavors, and full-service wedding planning. In addition to artisanal dining, Chad’s team can make your venue selection, wedding stationery, wine selection, custom cake, flowers, table and event décor, entertainment, photography and videography, limo and car service, valet parking service, and more.

Founder and Creative Director Bryan Tuggle and Executive Chef Francisco Colmenero take pride in making wedding dreams come true, designing “a more custom experience — real nouveaux, chic, state-of-the- art menus and craft cocktails,” using the freshest, highest quality ingredients. “Thank you for making my wedding day absolutely perfect,” wrote one bride.

Owner David Erickson has been in business for 40 years and in Palm Springs for 20 years. In addition to custom menus using locally grown produce (organic when possible) – often trending toward gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and fish and chicken – at your request, David’s team can support your vision from start to finish and create a special theme. Entertainment

You will find DJ Mod Girl at many local events and is always very entertaining. With decades’ experience as a writer/director/producer/choreographer/emcee for television, film and live tours, DJ Modgirl (AKA Kellee McQuinn), is a collaborative partner as well as a performer. She innately understands the “flow” of the Run of Show and is known for her innovative approach to content creation and interactive entertainment, always ensuring the highest level of production quality. She fits the Palm Springs vibe.

Add a royal spin with Palm Springs own British DJ Chris Paul. He’ll make your wedding party the best ever – just like he does for Palm Springs’ hippest hotel pool parties – and did for Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Airlines, the Queen Mother’s 90th birthday at Grosvenor House London, and Princess Diana at the Hippodrome.

Custom Tailor

Tailor to the stars Art Lewin Bespoke Suites in downtown Palm Springs is at the ready with a custom wedding package, custom suites, dress shirts, formal suits for men and women, and bridesmaids alterations.

Palm Springs Weekday Getaway

It’s no secret weekends are generally the most popular time for travel.  Save money and take advantage of lower resort rates by booking Sunday through Thursday.  Enjoy a peaceful getaway with fewer crowds. Go ahead, use up some of that PTO you so well deserve.

Here are some ideas to kickstart that weekday getaway in Palm Springs.

Mid-Week Happy Hours

Shanghai Red’s offers drink specials from 4 – 6 pm. Sunday night is a great night to catch some live entertainment.

Shanghai Reds

Or try your luck at the nearby Agua Caliente Casino, home of the ever-festive 360 Sports Bar. You can parlay their happy hour from 3 – 5 pm into a happenin’ weeknight full of food and fun.

In the Uptown Design District, afternoons differ from the happy hour at 1501 Uptown Gastropub. Tuesday through Sunday from 3 – 5 pm, you will enjoy discount deliciousness like chilled mesquite tri-tip or a date & arugula salad harvested from local ingredients. Wash it down with a dizzying selection of craft beers or a 1501 classic martini.  Trio also offers a Happy Hour every day from 3 – 6 pm in the bar, including drink and food specials. Try the Prime Rib Sliders or the Trio Mac & Cheese.

1501 gastropub

Paul Bar/Food is a place you need to find. It’s off the beaten path but well worth the visit.  Their happy hour runs from 4 – 7:15 pm Wednesday through Sunday, but time becomes irrelevant in this speakeasy throwback. Immerse yourself in a 1920s aesthetic as you heat up your palate with a succulent pork chop dappled with date chutney and flanked with bacon and corn mash. Now, cool down your weeknight with a black Manhattan or the popular frozen sidecar poured by the friendliest staff on Vista Chino. Have a ball with Paul!

Liven It Up with Music & Entertainment

The Ace Hotel is a mainstay of millennial mirth. On Monday, Bingo & Trivia night is back in the King’s Highway lounge beginning at 7 pm; Zen out on Tuesdays with sunset yoga led by Power Yoga Palm Springs, free and open to all; and experience jazz under the stars every Wednesday with dinner. Whatever weeknight you prefer to party, you can always Ace it!

The Palm Springs Cultural Center offers live music on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays from 5 to 7 pm.

Another daily destination is the Marlin Bar at Tommy Bahama. Float away on a coconut cloud… we’re not just being poetic; coconut cloud is the name of one of their cocktails. As the spirits slide down your sipper, the spirit of the surroundings rises. Live music ignites the night from 5 to 8 pm, so you’ll have plenty of time to rest up for tomorrow’s mid-week mayhem.

Rawkfist gets raucous every Thursday with live music at The Village. Hearty eats and healthy pours characterize this local watering hole, where hip meets hoppin’!

Elevate your weekend eve at PS Air, a cozy cabaret fashioned to feel like you’re aboard a vintage cross-country flight. Each Thursday night, you can swoon to the sounds of country heartthrob Brian Scott, a burly baritone who gives new meaning to the term “fly the friendly skies.”

Palm Springs is the epicenter of LGBTQ+ realness, and there’s a soiree every night of the week. Whether it’s show tune Monday at Quadz, drag revue Wednesday at Hunters, Quadz, drag revue Wednesday at Hunters, or their Thursday at Chill Bar, we’ve got you covered.

Check the calendar at Oscar’s, a centrally situated venue that often graces your weeknight with wonder. They are always adding new shows and entertainers.

Oscars JAckie Beat

Toucans is a weeknight mainstay, with Latin fever to kick off the festivities and playhouse Thursdays to wrap it up. The glitzy gay vibes contrast with the kitsch Polynesian décor to whisk you away to a tropical escape every evening of the week.

Tiki Your Fancy

While we’re on the topic of tiki, Palm Springs boasts exotic enclaves all over town. Drive under the A+ A-frame of The Reef and transport yourself to a South Pacific paradise. The bar is open until 10 pm every weeknight (11 pm on Thursdays), so let your palate be the passport to another world.

In Uptown, you’ll find the one-two rum punch of Tonga Hut. Tonga is only open Thursday through Sunday, but its “secret room” truly lives up to its name. Inquire within to book your mid-week shenanigans.

Swing on over to the swingin’est pad around: Bootlegger Tiki. Nifty nautical concoctions pepper their menu, from Barbados Heat to Man Overboard, and they offer a double dose of joy in the form of two happy hours during the week. So, we’ll see you from 3-4 pm AND 10-11 pm Sunday through Thursday!

Old-School Excellence

Palm Springs establishments blend old-school esteem with new-school coolness.

In South Palm Springs, Seymour’s is tucked playfully away in the confines of Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. The interior evokes a jitterbug/flapper feel, and the menu lists cocktail items like Pretty in Pink and Scarlett Simian. This classic bar will transport you with its lush interiors, moody lighting, and a sneaky unmarked side entrance. Seymour’s also features a large outdoor patio with lounge seating and bocce ball for a spirited night under the desert stars.

Melvyn’s at Ingleside Inn is another excellent, long-standing Palm Springs hang-out famous with Frank Sinatra. Stop by the lounge on Sundays and enjoy the jazz jam. The entertainment begins at 3 pm.  This is where the staff is still wearing black ties and some items.

Indulge in a naughty nightcap at Truss & Twine, home of the Fallen Angel and the Hanky Panky. They also serve drinks! Opens nightly at 6 pm. Tailor Shop is the new kid on the block, but what a block party it is! From highballs to low lighting, this is a weeknight done right.

And remember VillageFest, our free open-air fair every Thursday night on Palm Canyon.

So, why wait for Friday? TGI-midweek in Palm Springs!
