Guide To Local Palm Springs Coffee Shops

There’s no shortage of places to eat and drink in Palm Springs, especially when it comes to coffee. Almost every main thoroughfare has an independent shop or two with top-quality beans and brews and plenty of local flavor and flair. We can’t think of a better way to start your day than to enjoy a relaxing beverage in an independent Palm Springs coffee shop.

Owner Erika Flannery says that the slightly spicy Mexican mocha is also a hit with visitors – and their matcha and chair are also some of their most popular drinks.

Their shop also has a great selection of healthy grab-and-go meals or snacks for the road. But if you plan on staying awhile, Cafe La Jefa is an ideal place to sit and watch the world go by, with stellar views of the mountains from their patio.

One of the most charming ways to experience Palm Springs is at a small boutique hotel. Some properties here have as few as 10 rooms, and often have a pool, courtyard and its own variety of charm. These are extra special places to stay for those couples who are looking for peace, quiet and privacy.

Hotels have a range of aesthetics and price points: places like Sparrows Lodge, Korakia Pensione, and Talavera Hotel give off romantic hideaway vibes and is an instant retreat to a bohemian paradise.

In our era, celebrity designer Steve Hermann has brought in modern touches and comforts to top off the midcenutry elegance.

A Guide To Your Quick Getaway

Palm Canyon welcomes you into its outstretched arms, then routes you lovingly to Indian Canyon and pulls you back in an endless loop of sustenance and style. The hometown eateries offer tasty food done right, and the shopping options are playful: stroll and peruse without the stress of a hard-sell scenario.

But first, relaxing is the most important thing to do on your Palm Springs quick getaway.  We began as a stress-free resort destination, and we’ve always maintained that vibe. And really, you desert it! The endless sunshine, sparking pools, and beautiful mountain views will make this easy.

Family walking downtown Palm Springs

Day 1 – Arrive & Unwind

Check in for your stay and spend some time by the pool. There is no way to get in the Palm Springs quick weekend vibe entirely, like catching a few rays and enjoying a cocktail. There is an extensive collection of small hotels and inns to choose from. Or, if you want your own space, there are over 2,000 vacation rentals from small to large estates.

Once you’re settled, it’s time for a bite. Where better to start than at the heart?

Downtown Palm Springs

La Plaza is the perfect inaugural destination to plug into your GPS as you navigate to our hearty hometown and your quick Palm Springs getaway. You’ll get the protein punch you need to conquer the downtown shopping scene with lunch options ranging from Bill’s Pizza to L’Atelier Café to Farm to Grand Central.

Then, when you’re ready to explore what makes Palm Springs home, explore our heritage across the street at the Palm Springs Historical Society. They offer walking tours that delve into our celebrity allure, midcentury modern mastery, and  Uptown Design District.

As night falls on your Palm Springs quick getaway, your appetite for decadence rises. Satiate it at The Tropicale, where a Crispy, Boneless Southern Fried Chicken awaits. Reserve an outdoor table and sip an exotic cocktail to savor the desert ambiance fully.  For dinner and a show, you’ll love Michael Homes’ Purple Room. This is where the sophistication and glamour of the Rat Pack era come alive.

Day 2

Morning brings a bevy of new taste sensations. After a dip in the pool, immerse yourself in deliciousness with a home-style breakfast at Wilma & Frieda. Slice into nice with their meatloaf topped with fried eggs, or surrender to your sweet tooth and order the blackberry custard French toast (you know you want it)!

It’s official: your tank is full and ready for adventure, so rev up your proverbial engine with a Red Jeep Tour of Indian Canyons. This place rocks (literally) with formations and flora arranged to dazzle.

On the topic of legacy, book a post-tour trip to Las Casuelas, one of the oldest operating restaurants in Palm Springs. They have been harvesting hominess since 1958 and are serving up six decades of heritage to their grateful guests daily.

Retreat to your resort pool for the afternoon and keep the kids cool…

ok, enough family time –

It’s Happy Hour!

Celebrate at Trio, the brightly-hued party palace stocked with signature cocktails that are a who’s-who of who’s thirsty. After polishing off a Spatini and Forever Marilyn, book a dinner table and get a thrill at the hometown meat-and-potatoes majesty of a local favorite, Trio’s Yankee Pot Roast.

But everyone has a different definition of home. Perhaps you prefer the Wiener Schnitzel at Johannes, the legendary chef’s answer to steak and potatoes.

Or the culinary comforts of Central Europe, as re-imagined at the upscale/down-home enclave of Miro’s.

Not Your Ordinary Diner

As you pack up and prepare to leave town from your fun Palm Springs quick getaway, fuel your waking dreamscape with a final stop at King’s Highway Diner. From the outside, it’s a triumph of midcentury architectural flair. Once inside, you’ll indulge in local fare like their hometown Twin Palms Wagyu Burger, washed down with a rich, refreshing Date Shake made with fresh Medjool fruit and swirled into vanilla bean ice cream. If you’re fortunate enough to stay until Monday, book a room at the adjacent Ace Hotel & Swim Club and enjoy bingo and trivia under the same roof. You’ll be glad you did.

But alas, it seems we have broken our 48-hour promise and overstayed by a day. Oh well, Palm Springs is synonymous with expanding your horizons, expelling your inhibitions, and succumbing to luxury. The concept of home transcends the weekend calendar; once you’re here, we never want to go.

Desert Modernism Style

Since the 1920s, visionary modernist architects have designed sleek, modern homes that have embraced the desert environment. The dramatic geographic surroundings of the Coachella Valley inspired a design aesthetic in the middle of the 20th Century, now called Desert Modernism.

By architect William Cody

A New Form of American Architecture

Notable for its use of glass, clean lines, natural and manufactured resources, and connection of indoor and outdoor spaces, Desert Modernism evokes a lifestyle of simple elegance and informality. Influenced by the dictates of desert living and the year-round warmth of Palm Springs, the style grew out of the architect’s and designer’s adaptive use of inventive materials, modern construction techniques, and new (post-war) technologies.

It served an enthusiastic and willing clientele. Talented architects were drawn to the desert by chance and opportunity. The village adopted an informal and relaxed feel, and its architecture started to follow. Form followed function in Desert Modernism: shaded breezeways, flat roofs, muted exterior colors, and large expanses of outdoor spaces characterized structures.

The exteriors of Desert Modern homes, first and foremost, reflect the beauty of the surrounding landscape—this is done through large windows that let the outside in. Low, sleek lines make buildings blend in with the scenery, and open interiors keep that airy desert feeling. Desert Modernism uses natural building materials like wood and stone to blur the line between man-made and nature-made. True to its midcentury modern roots, less is more.

Because Palm Springs was a seasonal resort, people were more willing to experiment with daring designs. They were not living in these homes year-round, so they were more willing to try new ideas.

Distinct Hallmarks

Many of the Desert Modernism buildings have these four things in common;

Simple lines and cantilevered rooflines provide ample shade

Clerestory windows extend to the ceiling to maximize exposure to the sun and sky without sacrificing privacy

Brise-soleil  or decorative screens deflect sunlight and reduce heat gain while also shielding interiors for privacy

Patterned brick shadow-block walls

The Architects and Designers of Desert Modernism

Palm Springs Desert Modernism brought together architects, developers, and interior designers to create an effortless, simple style. These midcentury designers helped put the Desert Modern style on the map and left Palm Springs all the more beautiful for it.

Architect William Krisel designed over 2,500 homes in Palm Springs throughout his career. This home was part of a series of 90 tract homes called “Twin Palms Estates.” Its white exterior with breeze block accents gives it an optimistic look.

Frey House II, built in 1964, was designed by Albert Frey. Frey is considered one of the founders of the Desert Modern style. When it was first constructed, it had the highest elevation of any building in Palm Springs and was constructed to have as little of an impact on the surrounding environment as possible. Frey lived in this home until his death in 1998 at the age of 95. It is now owned and managed by the Palm Springs Art Museum.

The neutral, earthy tones of the Frank Sinatra Twin Palms estate reflect the surrounding landscape. The home, designed by E. Stewart Williams in 1947, set the standard for celebrity Palm Springs residences to come.

Meet Local Artist Tysen Knight

The Brilliant Benches of Palm Springs

There is a direct line between art and society. The simple swoop of a brushstroke can connect the viewer and the creator, the public and the private. Artistic expression is a two-way street that invites observation and reflection, and nobody understands this dichotomy better than Tysen Knight.

Artist Tysen Knight of Palm Springs

“I describe my style as pop urban art with a little splash of fine art in there,” Tysen explains. “I draw inspiration from all those different mediums. I started out as like a graffiti artist and painting on jeans for kids at school when I was in high school and things of that nature. But I was still fascinated with fine art so I can kind of blend those together. I can do fine art. I can do pop art. I can do graffiti art, so I just came up with my own coin, my own phrase: pop urban art.”

Tysen’s aesthetic is transforming the benches around town into veritable conversation pieces. Their electric array of colors invigorates our already iconic landscape. “Palm Springs definitely has his own unique, actually beautiful style. I think the modernism and the architecture is amazing. I just feel as though I was able to bring a style that was different and we were able to kind of gel it together.”

Fans of the bench makeover initiative will be fascinated to learn that the concept began on a different medium altogether: film. “I came up with an idea to produce a street art documentary,” recounts Tysen. “I submitted it to film festivals and they got selected for the AmDocs Film Festival right here Palm Springs at the Camelot Theater.”

The trip down memory lane continues as Tysen narrates, “Russell Pritchard from the Palm Springs Arts Commission came to the screening of my documentary.” The two collaborators melded their visions for bringing passionate creativity to public spaces in the form of bench murals. “We were able to get it all laid out and I started in July of 2019, the hottest day of the summer,” Tysen notes with a reflective chuckle.

Though the artist’s ideas were grand, he had to start small. “They granted the funds and they gave the approval to do it as a test pilot project, just to see how the community reacted to it and the business owners, because that was very important to get everyone involved. The first set of benches, I did 11, the first set was kind of, they wanted icons.”

Artist Tysen Knight of Palm Springs bench

Tysen depicted such luminary figures as Elvis, Marilyn, and Warhol in his first round of creations, but he also mixed in some of his personal inspirations. The inaugural series of bench art included Basquiat and Keith Haring, to name a few. “Most people knew who Andy Warhol was, but they weren’t too familiar with Keith Haring and Basquiat, so I think that was something that we was able to educate people on who those artists were, and along with having like Judy Garland and just kind of that really old school chic Palm Springs feel. I think we did a good job mixing, blended them all together.”

Artist Tysen Knight of Palm Springs bench

As always, Tysen masters the art of understatement. His bench endeavor isn’t just a good job; it’s an outlet for dozens of tastemakers chosen by Tysen himself. “We were able to employ over 40 something artists. And I looked around, searched on the Internet and I was looking around and I didn’t see any other city that did this to this magnitude.”

For Tysen Knight, the power of painting lies in the delicate relationship between the audience and the artwork. “A lot of artists and people here that do appreciate different genres of art, they’ve just probably never been exposed to it. So I think that’s a good thing that we’re able to expose people to other forms of art and they get an understanding of it. I think that’s a really cool thing.”

Artist Tysen Knight of Palm Springs

Ever humble, Tysen credits his team of dreamweavers with the success of the popular bench project. “Just being able to bring other artists into the fold and just kind of, not changing the whole dynamic of the art scene here, but just adding more layers and elements.”

Harnessing the majesty of the moment, Tysen concludes, “I feel like we’re just on the cusp of making history in Palm Springs.”

And you have a front-row seat to our history as it continues to be made. We saved a bench for you.
