With Palm Springs Windmill Tours

Coming from Los Angeles, thousands of huge windmills greet travelers on both sides of Interstate 10. This natural wind tunnel is the San Gorgonio Pass and is the gap between Southern California’s two highest mountains. The Palm Springs windmill farm was the first for Southern California, opening in 1982.

In 2022, the Palm Springs windmill farm will celebrate its 40th year of generating clean energy. To commemorate this anniversary, The Palm Springs Windmill Tours curated a new exhibit on the history of how the first wind farm in Southern California got started. They are the only windmill tour in the U.S. that offers in-depth tours on a private wind farm. This is a very popular thing to do while visiting Palm Springs and is great for all ages.

The Palm Springs Windmill Tours not only tells you a story of 40 years of wind farms in Southern California, you will also learn about wind energy, how a wind turbine works, and a bit about the history of wind power. You will also learn why the San Gorgonio Pass is one of the most consistently windy places in the United States. After the tour, you will have a better understanding about renewable energy as a whole, which is so important to the future of our planet.

About The Tours

You have two options. For those that want a personal and custom tour, take a VIP charted tour. For those happy to learn and explore on your own, take a self-driving tour in the comfort of your own vehicle. Remember, this is a private wind farm, so you can only access many of the locations through Palm Springs Windmill Tours. Get ready to see some windmill blades as long as a football field!

Here’s how the tours work.
