Ernest Coffee is located in the same space Don the Beachcomber’s tiki restaurant opened in 1953.
Ernest Coffee was named after Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt. He better known by his pseudonym Donn Beach, was a legendary American entrepreneur and restaurateur who is considered the founding father of the tiki bar culture. In 1933, Gantt opened his first Polynesian-themed bar, Don’s Beachcomber Café, in Hollywood, California. The bar featured innovative tropical cocktails, elaborate décor, and immersive island-inspired ambiance. It quickly became a sensation, attracting celebrities, socialites, and curious patrons alike. This establishment marked the beginning of what would later become known as the tiki bar phenomenon.
