If you’ve visited downtown Palm Springs, chances are you’ve seen—or shopped at—Destination PSP, the city’s go-to shop for mid-century modern gifts, souvenirs, and home décor. But what you may not know is that the man behind the store, Jeffrey Bernstein, is also a civic leader who served as Mayor of Palm Springs and is a current member of the Palm Springs City Council.

How Destination PSP Revolutionized Palm Springs Souvenir Shopping

When Jeffrey and his partner Oscar Chamudes relocated from Manhattan to Palm Springs’ Oasis Del Sol neighborhood, they were enchanted by the city’s architecture and sunshine—but unimpressed by the souvenir options.

“I wanted to send gifts home that reflected the city’s mid-century lifestyle—but there was nothing to buy,” says Jeffrey.

So he designed his own.

Destination PSP is the first store in the Coachella Valley to focus exclusively on midcentury modern style merchandise. Everything from drinkware and handbags to t-shirts and poolside fashion is designed to reflect the Palm Springs lifestyle.

Most products are:

  • Designed in-house

  • Made locally or in the U.S.A.

  • Inspired by the region’s iconic mid-century style

Top sellers include:

  • The “Twin Palms” tissue box (shaped like a classic MCM home)

  • Exclusive t-shirt designs

  • A “atomic” glassware line

Destination PSP is also the only store in Palm Springs to offer swimwear for men, women, and children, featuring lines like Esther Williams and Bettie Page.

From Retail to City Hall: Jeffrey Bernstein's Civic Role

Jeffrey isn’t just a business owner—he’s also a leader in public service. In 2023, he was elected to the Palm Springs City Council, and in 2024, he served as Mayor of Palm Springs as part of the city’s rotating mayoral system.

As a councilmember, he’s focused on:

  • Supporting small businesses

  • Promoting historic preservation

  • Advocating for sustainable tourism

  • Ensuring inclusive economic growth

Jeffrey frequently collaborates with city departments, nonprofits, and local entrepreneurs to make Palm Springs a better place to live, work, and visit.

Why Palm Springs?

“We visited twice, and on the third time, we bought a house within the week,” Jeffrey recalls. “We moved in six weeks later.”

Drawn by the climate and architecture, Jeffrey and Oscar quickly became full-time residents and active community members. Their business and civic work reflect their deep love for the city.
