Historic Palm Springs Hotels

Experience one of the many historic Palm Springs hotels on your next stay.

Palm Springs hotels are iconic and steeped in history. From the luxurious resorts to the chic boutique hotels, each one has a unique story to tell that is woven into the fabric of this desert oasis, The Capital of Cool.

In the early 1900s, Palm Springs was just a small village tucked away in the Southern California Desert. It was known for its hot springs and warm, dry climate, which were believed to have healing properties.

Palm Springs Hotels – 1920’s

During the 1920s, Hollywood discovered Palm Springs as a convenient weekend getaway destination. The town became a hotspot for celebrities looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. Soon, hotels started cropping up to cater to the influx of movie stars and wealthy tourists.

Korakia Pensione

Built in 1924, The Moroccan villa was the former hideaway of Scottish painter Gordon Coutts. The villa served as the venue for Coutts to re-create his earlier life in Tangier by employing a wide variety of architectural features that promoted a Moroccan décor.  Coutts hung his paintings in the library, where he regaled his guests with tales of adventure.

Korakia quickly became a gathering place for musicians, visiting artists, and celebrities such as Rudolph Valentino and Errol Flynn. It is rumored that even Winston Churchill has painted in the villa’s Artist Studio.

The Willows Historic Palm Springs Inn and Bishop House

The Willows consists of two stunning mansions, the Mead and Bishop House.

The Mead house was constructed in 1925 as the winter home of businessman and philanthropist William Mead and designed by architect William Dodd with Dodd & Richards. He was considered one of Southern California’s most prominent architects. The land they chose was of particular interest because the Tahquitz creek ran right through it. Then, the name came from the fact that there were many willow trees on the property. Although Mead isn’t well known today, he was a prominent force in the community at the time. Much of his fortune came from real estate and a fire insurance business. He later founded the Central State Bank.

The same year Dodd & Richards designed a strikingly similar home for Roland Bishop (468 W. Tahquitz Canyon Way), now known as the Bishop House. Bishop was a prominent Los Angeles businessman who headed Bishop & Co., Southern California’s largest confectioner and purveyor of baked goods, which was acquired by the National Biscuit Co. in 1930, now known as Nabisco.

The Mead house was later purchased by Samuel Untermyer, who was a rather famous lawyer from New York and well known for being the first lawyer in the U.S. to receive a fee of $1 million dollars. He became one of the wealthiest lawyers in the world. His wife had passed away and his health was beginning to fail, so he decided to move to a dry climate to rejuvenate.

Einstein Room

One of the most iconic and important figures in the history of the Mead house was a visit from a good friend of Samuel Untermyer, Dr. Albert Einstein. He would visit with his wife Elsa. You can stay in the same room Einstein enjoyed.

Marion Davies Room

In the mid-1950’s, the Willows was taken over by a famous tenant – Marion Davies. While many know Davies as a movie star and long time mistress of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst, few realize she was also a brilliant businesswoman and real estate speculator. In 1955, she was part of consortium of investors who bought the fabled Desert Inn. With its location directly adjacent to the hotel, the Willows made a perfect headquarters for Davies and a charming venue for entertaining such famous friends as Mary Pickford and her husband Buddy Rogers.

Colony Palms Hotel and Bungalows

Al and his brother Lou Wertheimer were the former operator of the Colony Club in Detroit. It seemed the owner of the club, Johnny Ryan, was eliminated by order of the notorious Purple Gang. The club ground to a halt, so the Werthemier’s began looking elsewhere.

Al built the Colonial House in 1936 (572 N. Indian Canyon Drive) and it allegedly featured an underground gambling den accessed only by a secret passage. It was planned to occupy an entire block. The first unit of the Spanish Colonial Revival style was completed along Indian Canyon with two large wings to the rear enclosing a large landscaped patio and pool. The lower floor contained seven apartments and the second floor one large apartment occupied by his wife Thelma.

It is now part of the Hermann luxury resorts brand. This upscale adults-only boutique hotel and its inviting palm tree-lined pool are set against the backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains. Casa Cody

Herold and Harriet Cody came to Palm Springs in 1916 for Herold’s health. His health was getting worse so they rented out their Hollywood home and moved to Palm Springs for the dry desert air to cure his recurring bouts with pneumonia. Harold, a Los Angeles architect, is said to be the cousin of legendary Buffalo Bill Cody. One of his local projects was the remodel of Riverside’s Mission Inn. Harriet is said to be a direct descendant of Sir Thomas Moore and from one of the wealthiest families in Philadelphia.

Cody camped out on their newly acquired property until construction of their adobe house was completed. To make ends meet, she decided to start the first stable in Palm Springs. Harriet carried on the operations of the riding stables until 1928 and then dealt in real estate until she built Casa Cody in 1937 (175 South Cahuilla Road). She and her daughter Patricia operated the apartments until her death in 1954. Her daughter married Bill Rogers, a cousin of famous Will Rogers.

It is now called the Casa Cody Inn and is the oldest continuous operating hotel of Palm Springs hotels. It is designated as a Class I historic site.

Palm Springs Hotels – 1940’s

Ingleside Estate

Another popular hotel from this era was the Ingleside Inn, now known as Ingleside Estate. It was originally built as a private residence in the 1920s, but was later converted into a hotel by Ruth Hardy in 1940. The 22-acre Ruth Hardy Park was named after her.

The inn became synonymous with Hollywood glamour. Charles Laughton, Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Gary Cooper, Salvador Dali, the elusive Howard Hughes, Lucille Ball, Bette Midler, Frank Sinatra, Debbie Reynolds, Xavier Cugat, Jackie Coogan, Kay Ballard, Yogi Berra, John Florsheim, and Jolie Gabor were all guests. The list goes on and on.

The 32 rooms had been remodeled and they kept the antique furnishings, which came with the home. Each guest room had a fireplace and French doors opening into the gardens. Trees were moved to give guests the finest view possible.

Del Marcos Hotel

The midcentury brought about a new era of Palm Springs hotels. The architecture became more streamlined and modern, reflecting the post-war optimism of the time. One of the most famous examples of this is the Del Marcos Hotel (255 W Baristo Road), which opened in 1947. Designed by architect William F. Cody, the hotel’s sleek lines and minimalistic design became an instant hit.

Del Marcos was receiving national recognition. William Cody was presented the award of the year for resort design by the American Institute of Architecture. More attention was brought to the hotel through an illustrated article in an issue of Architectural Forum, which had a large nationwide circulation.

When Wrather and Granville decided to sell the property in the early 1960s, it was purchased by Hollywood producer Joshua Logan. Logan had the property converted into a hotel and added a number of luxurious amenities, including a pool and a tennis court.

Today, L’Horizon is a stunning hotel that offers unparalleled luxury and sophistication. Its sleek and stylish design pays homage to the midcentury modern era, with clean lines, simple shapes, and lots of natural light. The bungalows each have their own private patio and outdoor shower. The Parker Palm Springs

The property got its start in 1961 as California’s very first Holiday Inn. Owner Milt Hicks’ Holiday Inn was the 200th Holiday Inn built to date.

Soon after it opened it was purchased by the singing cowboy, Gene Autry. Autry’s intention for the property was to house his newly-acquired baseball team, the California Angels, during spring training.

In 1994, Autry sold the property to Rose Narva, who partnered with fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy to transform the hotel into a French inspired establishment named the Givenchy Hotel & Spa. Even following the sale of the property, Autry and his wife remained living in a two bedroom, two bath private home on the property, now known as the Gene Autry residence and available at The Parker.

Jack Parker purchased the property and hired designer Jonathan Adler to lead a $27-million-dollar renovation and in 2004 the hotel reopened as the Parker Palm Springs. The 13-acre property was re-imagined in the style that Adler likes to call “hippie chic,” with an eclectic mix of vintage treasures decorating the guest rooms and common spaces.

No matter what your preferred style of accommodation, there’s no denying that Palm Springs hotels are a key part of the town’s incredible history. From the early hot springs resorts to the midcentury modern marvels, these hotels have played a major role in shaping Palm Springs’ identity.

Live LGBTQ Entertainment in Palm Springs

Enjoy a Meal and a Show.

 By Kevin Perry

Everyone wants to be wanted. That’s more than just a vaguely flirty lyric – it speaks to our truth and our identity. We must be loved for who we are, we should be treated like queens and/or kings, and we demand entertainment that reflects our fabulous, fun, fierce personalities.

Apparently, other parts of the nation/world missed the memo, but Palm Springs always has your back. We want you, and we’re not afraid to show it.

So, get ready to paint the town rainbow, because we’re exploring the best LGBTQ live entertainment of Palm Springs.

The Retro Realness of Reforma

Great live entertainment is both timely and timeless. The pulse of the bass can whisk you back in time to a disco-drenched nostalgia or cement you in the queer-and-now. And when the planets align, the past and present meld in perfect harmony.

Such is the case at Reforma, a throwback thrill of rhythmic splendor. The décor evokes the heyday of Studio 54 while the talent blazes a path ever forward.

reforma-nightlife

Drag royalty rules the sprawling space, embodying (with a capital BODY) divas like Madonna, The Spice Girls and Lady Gaga in events that erupt every weekend.

A DJ loft overlooks Reforma’s warehouse-esque dance floor, orchestrating musical mayhem with an undertow of true community. Amidst the undeniable joy of these proceedings runs a current of social consciousness. Trans and drag performers stand defiant against the climate of ignorance that shrouds gay celebrations in other locales, firmly planting a flag of acceptance that beckons queer guests to Palm Springs.

The owners of Reforma are no strangers to safe space soirees. The party never ends at Chill Bar on Arenas, known for events as varied as gender-bending bingo to “revealing” dance nights featuring jock go-go men and thicc talent.

Reforma Dining

In addition to top-notch LGBTQ entertainment, Reforma also offers an elevated sophisticated menu. This is not bar food. Think Spanish beer served with mussels made with Mexican chorizo, fennel, and pickled Fresno chiles. Or  other international flavors like the Peruvian Lomo Saltado with stir-fried steak.

Is it hot in here, or is it just the hunky entertainers of Palm Springs? Let’s regain focus and return to the southern edge of downtown PS, shall we?

Oscar’s Opens Wide

If you haven’t experienced the Sunday T-Dance at Oscar’s, are you really even gay? It is a raucous revelation set to the tune of your fave tunes from yesteryear. LGBTQ history truly comes to life here, with celebrations such as the Dallas cast reunion and Legends of Drag show, just to name a few. Enjoy their Bitchiest Brunch every Saturday and Sunday.

Bitchiest-brunch-Saturdays_Oscars

The crowds at Oscar’s are the equivalent of a group-hug in kinetic, intoxication motion… and now they have more room to spread their beefy, well-toned wings. The courtyard is expanding and the establishment will add a new bar to its western flank. It just goes to show that when you’re already “The Scene of Palm Springs,” the only thing to do is take advice from adult film actress and pop icon Andrea True and deliver More, More, More. Check their events calendar for all events.

The brunch menu is heavy on eggs with traditional benedicts and omelets. They also offer an 8 oz. breakfast burger with bacon, cheese, avocado and an egg. Dinner entrée options include a beef filet, salmon, or pasta. There is also a variety of thin crust pizzas including chicken alfredo and BBQ pulled port.

The Hottest Tickets in Town

Just like the stripes of the Pride flag, the entertainment in Palm Springs offers an array of diversity. Whether you crave classic crooners or modern drag with a Latin twist, it’s all happening here.

For a midcentury spin on all things LGBTQ, check out Michael Holmes at the Purple Room, a Rat Pack mainstay that now shimmers with queer appeal. Jazz favorites cavort with bawdy routines to transport you to a gregariously gay version of the 1960s.

purple room stage

Originally opened in 1960 inside the Club Trinidad Hotel, this unique venue was an intimate hangout spot for celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin, and even served as the hangout for the infamous “Rat Pack” act. They offer an extensive list of live entertainment events in-season, so there’s something for everyone.

The Purple Room menu is quite large for this size of a supper club with over 20 choices for small plates alone. The main menu includes classics like short ribs, beef tenderloin, New York strip steak and sole piccata. There is also a vegan ravioli option or vegetarian risotto. Pair with a Rat Pack bourbon.

Note: The Purple Room is closed in the summer.

PS Drag Brunch

Well, PS Drag Brunch is serving a buffet of attitude (and mimosas!) every weekend. They just took up residency at The Saguaro, a brilliant blast of resort chic that you must see to believe. Rosemary Galore is your ringmaster of raunch, ensuring that your day gets off to a naughty, nosh-filled start. The live LGBTQ entertainment drag show includes a 3-course brunch. A Commitment to Freshness

Kaiser’s commitment to the freshest, finest, and most sustainable ingredients has always been at the heart of their menu. “Everything is made from scratch” as owner Lee Morcus loves to share. Handwritten note cards with family recipes have been passed down from his grandmother to his mother to him. Premier Products are at the core of the restaurant ethos.

Prime Cuts

Prime is the highest grade of US meat. Kaiser Grille’s prime beef is aged in-house a minimum of 28 – 35 days. A small ranch province from dedicated ranchers, free of antibiotics and hormones. USDA prime is rare, with around only 2% of beef receiving this grade. The Kaiser Grille Prime is a smaller percentage of the top prime.

Their finest selections include the Porterhouse, Cowboy Rib Chop, Kansas City Strip, and Wagyu Beef Tomahawk Rib Chop. These are all aged in-house a minimum of 35 days. You will find these cuts sweeter on the bone.

Other prime choices that are hand-trimmed and aged in-house a minimum of 28 days include the Filet Mignon, New York Strip and Boneless Ribeye Steak.

Faroe Islands King Salmon

Kaiser Grille serves the best salmon in the world. That’s right!

If you can picture a triangle with Iceland at the top left, Norway at the top right, and Scotland at the bottom, the Faroe Islands are roughly in the middle of that triangle. They are a North Atlantic archipelago that is part of Denmark, though they are self-governing.

Because salmon from the Faroe Islands are able to roam freely in sizable contained environments, their diet is natural, rather than controlled. Their nutrient rich foods not only nourish them, but it also helps them develop layers of healthy fats. These are those good-for-you fats we hear about like Omega-3 fatty acids that lower the risk of heart-disease, support joints and healthy brain function. They also have an incredible protein to weight ratio, meaning they are a sustainable choice of protein when compared to land animals.

Sustainable Seafood

Kaiser Grille adheres to the Monterey Aquarium Seafood Watch. This was launched in 1999 and is considered the international seafood gold standard for sustainability. It’s science-based assessments helps people navigate purchasing sustainable seafood through their rating system.

In additional to salmon, other sustainable seafood menu selections include Halibut, Sea Bass, Mahi Mahi, Lobster, Sea Scallops, and Swordfish.

Mediterranean Signatures

Traditional and authentic Mediterranean recipes feature ingredients sources from the finest of producers. Selections include a roast Half Duck with tart cherry reduction, Chicken Picatta, Moroccan Beef Short Ribs, and roasted Jidori Chicken Breast. Their signature dish is Lobster Paella for two.

 Pasta

Kaiser also offers signature pasta dishes like Colossal Shrimp or Chicken Fettuccine, wood oven baked Penne Bolognese, and Lobster Linguine. The Beef Tenderloin (filet) Stroganoff Bourguignon and Fettuccine is exceptional. Ask the server for vegetarian options.

When the Palm Springs Follies performed in the theatre.

History of the Plaza Theatre

The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre story begins in true Hollywood style. It was built in 1936 by heiress Julia Carnell, who loved Palm Springs but thought there wasn’t enough to do. She solved the problem by buying land and building the La Plaza shopping complex, the first outdoor mall in America.

It was designed by architect Harry Williams, father of renowned midcentury modern architect E. Stewart Williams. Julia  Carnell brought Williams from Ohio to design the entire Plaza shopping center and the iconic theater. The theatre’s architectural style is Spanish Colonial Revival, a trendy style in California at the time. At the time of its opening, the theatre was considered one of the country’s most modern and luxurious movie theaters.

The theatre’s iconic identity was established on its opening to the public in 1936 with the world premiere of the Oscar-winning George Cukor film Camille, with its legendary star, Greta Garbo, allegedly slipped into the back of the theatre after the lights went down.

In addition to being a movie theatre, it was also the venue for nationally broadcast radio theatre programs by luminaries such as Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, and Amos ‘n’ Andy.

Palm Springs Follies

The Palm Springs Follies was a long-running musical revue performed in the Plaza Theatre. The show featured a cast of performers, all over the age of 55, and was known for its glitzy costumes, high-energy dance numbers, and classic show tunes.

The Follies was founded in 1990 by Riff Markowitz, a former Broadway dancer, and his wife, Mary Jardin, an actress and choreographer. The couple envisioned a show that would celebrate the talents and energy of older performers, and they drew upon Palm Springs’ reputation as a retirement destination to recruit a cast of seasoned entertainers.

Follies finale
Over the years, the Follies became a beloved fixture of Palm Springs’ cultural scene, attracting thousands of visitors yearly. The show’s performers were known for their impressive dance skills, their powerful voices, and their larger-than-life personalities, and they brought a sense of joy and vitality to the stage. The Palm Springs Follies ended in 2014 after a 23-year run.

Where We Are Now

Some $16 million is needed to preserve and keep the theatre alive with top-notch entertainment so that it will work on its own.

David Lee

David Lee made a $5 million donation in October 2021. In March of 2022, he hosted another fundraiser that included cast members of Frasier.

David was the Producer of Frasier, Wings, Cheers, and The Jefferson. For some of these shows, he also acted as writer and Director. Lee has been nominated eighteen times for Emmy Awards and won Nine times. He also won the Directors Guild Award, the Golden Globe Award, the Producers Guild Award, the GLAAD Media Award, the British Comedy Award, three Television Critics Association Awards, and the Peabody Award.

A near-sell-out crowd enjoyed a delightful, gossip-tinged afternoon as only this celebrity-centric playground can deliver. Team Frasier was testimony to Palm Springs’ celebrity magnetism, made possible only because multi-Emmy winner Lee (he also created Cheers) has loved Palm Springs all his life. First as a visitor with his parents, then with friends, and now as a resident for more than 20 years. plaza theatre Fundraiser

Donna and Jon Croel

In April of 2022, the Foundation board informed the Palm Springs City Council that it had received an incredibly generous donation of $2 million as a matching grant. The Croels are new residents of Palm Springs and were so captivated by the Plaza Theatre restoration project that they followed David Lee’s initial $5 million pledge with one of their own.

“We were honored to join David Lee, the Plaza Theatre Foundation founders, and all the other people who have donated to this important preservation project,” said Jon Croel. “Donna and I continue to be impressed by the significance of this restoration project and the important role that the Plaza Theatre has served in the history of Palm Springs. We hope our donation inspires others in the community to step forward and help the Foundation raise the remaining funds needed to restore this iconic building.”

$2 Million To Go

The foundation board secured an additional $2 million from the City of Palm Springs and $2.5 million from the State of California.

Since it began its capital campaign to raise funds to restore the iconic Plaza Theatre, the Foundation has raised $14.5M towards its goal of $16M. With $2M left to grow, there are many ways in which the public may play a significant role in the Plaza Theatre restoration.

Founder’s Circle is only available to the first 100 individuals committed to this critical and historic preservation project.
Each Founder’s name will be prominently displayed on a specially designed Founders Wall for $25,000 each.

Naming Opportunities are available for seats or other areas of the building.

The Plans for Restoration

In 2018, the City engaged the international architecture firm Gensler and historic preservation firm Chattel to develop a comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation plan. The Gensler conceptual plan called for a complete restoration of the historic aspects of the theatre, installing approximately 700 new seats, the expansion of the current lobby, significant infrastructure repairs and the installation of new theatre equipment, and significant structural improvements to meet current fire prevention and ADA mandates.

In 2022, Architectural Resources Group, Inc. was chosen to complete the design and oversee the renovation. Architectural Resources Group has completed several other historic projects of similar scope.

Curtain Up!

“It’s great to see people in the seats,” J.R. Roberts, chairman of the Save the Plaza Theatre restoration committee board of directors and former Palm Springs councilman, beamed in closing remarks. “It’s not often a working theatre needs restoration, but the Plaza does. We’d planned the after-reception for onstage. However, we don’t trust the stage to hold this many people.”

The Beauty of Oswit Canyon

A Treasure in Palm Springs

Nestled in south Palm Springs lies a hidden gem that deserves our unwavering attention and efforts to protect its natural wonders. A portion of its boarder is along Sought Palm Canyon Drive and the Canyon Heights neighborhood. Oswit Canyon, with its exquisite biodiversity and stunning views, is a serene sanctuary that needs preservation for the benefit of future generations. Here we explore the importance of saving Oswit Canyon and the initiatives taken to ensure its sustainability.

Oswit Canyon History

In 2016, Jane Garrison was admiring the beauty of Oswit Canyon when a hiker informed her of the impending plans to destroy the spectacular canyon by building hundreds of homes and a large flood retention system. Jane jumped into action and Save Oswit Canyon (SOC) was formed. For almost five years, SOC led an unwavering campaign to save Oswit which included collecting over 5,000 signatures from residents, a city initiative, fundraisers, a hard-hitting legal battle and much more activism. SOC never gave up the mission: “Not One Shovel, Not One House” in Oswit Canyon. Finally, in October 2020, SOC purchased the 114 acres in Oswit Canyon for over $7 million with grants from state and federal agencies, the City of Palm Springs and generous donations from caring individuals.

Bordering Oswit is the South Lykken Trail. Within the canyon is the Loop trail.

The Natural Beauty of Oswit Canyon

Oswit Canyon boasts a breathtaking landscape with majestic cliffs, rugged canyons, and lush vegetation. This untouched oasis is home to an impressive variety of flora and fauna, including rare plant species, migratory birds, and desert wildlife. Its tranquil streams and cascading waterfalls create a unique environment that offers solace and respite from urban life.

Environmental Significance

Protecting Oswit Canyon is crucial for the preservation of sensitive ecosystems. The diverse range of plants found here plays a vital role in preventing soil erosion, maintaining water quality, and supporting local wildlife habitats. By conserving this area, we can safeguard a delicate balance that sustains entire ecological communities.

Cultural & Historical Heritage

Oswit Canyon holds great cultural and historical significance for the local community. It has long been revered as a sacred land by the Agua Caliente tribe who have lived in the area for thousands of years. It is located just north of the Indian Canyons reservation and south of Tahquitz Canyon. By safeguarding this canyon, we help preserve our rich heritage and honor the traditions of those who came before us.

Oswit Canyon Threats and Challenges

Unfortunately, Oswit faces several threats that compromise its integrity. Urban expansion, invasive species, and people pose risks to the delicate ecosystem. It is paramount to address these challenges collaboratively to ensure the long-term survival of this natural wonder.

Conservation Efforts

Thankfully the Oswit Land Trust, environmentalists, and local authorities are actively striving to protect Oswit Canyon. Efforts include establishing nature reserves, implementing conservation programs, and educating the community about the canyon’s ecological significance. Encouraging responsible tourism and promoting sustainable practices also play a crucial role in preserving this natural treasure.

Public Involvement

Preserving Oswit requires a collective effort from residents, visitors, and policymakers alike. Individuals can contribute by supporting local conservation initiatives, participating in clean-up activities, and spreading awareness about the canyon’s ecological value. By involving schools, universities, and community organizations, we can foster a sense of stewardship towards this unique ecosystem.

In conclusion, preserving Oswit Canyon in Palm Springs is not just an environmental responsibility but an obligation to future generations. Its natural beauty, ecological importance, and cultural heritage make it an invaluable asset that must be safeguarded. Together, let us work towards ensuring the sustained protection of Oswit Canyon for the benefit of our environment, community, and the countless species that call it home.

The Waterfalls of Palm Springs Canyons

The Spa at Sec-he Wellness Experience

By Barbara Beckley

LED chromatic lights and a water bed built into the massage table – relaxing and energizing my body – as I’m getting a facial! (The most effective facial I’ve ever had, by the way.) What spa does this!? The new Spa at Sec-he Palm Springs.

These deluxe extras – included for free – are just one example of the state-of-the-art nurturing, soothing, and healing pleasures – many exclusive to this spa – that make The Spa at Sec-he truly one of the world’s best new day spas. Built atop the sacred hot mineral springs of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians – the springs for which the City of Palm Springs is named – the Tribe has spared no expense to give us a world class experience. “Culture before commerce,” enthused Tribal Chairman Reid D. Milanovich at the April 4, 2023, opening of their landmark spa. “We are honored to share some of our most precious rituals with the world. It’s a milestone our Tribe will not soon forget.”

Spa at Sec-he Arrival

It’s recommended you arrive at least one hour prior to your first scheduled appointment. This will ensure adequate time to check in, relax, and fully enjoy the amenities. It’s also recommended you remove all jewelry and other valuable prior to visiting. I checked in at the two-story, sunlight-filled lobby that was just beautiful.

Spa at Sec-he entrance

Private Spa Suite

After I checked in, I followed an attendant past glassed-in mineral pool gardens – into the posh Private Spa Suite. Measuring 3,588 square feet, it features a spacious lounge, with a double-faced fireplace, wrap-around couches, and flat-screen TV.  Glass walls open to a private patio deck and hot mineral water whirlpool. There are separate women’s and men’s locker rooms with private showers and spacious toiletry areas. A perfect choice for a girls’ spa day – like I and my six colleagues were enjoying. Also pre-wedding spa parties and because the suite is coed, it’s ideal for family gatherings and business/client incentive pampering. For up to 18 guests.

Sec-he Spa_private spa suite

A Spa Lovers Dream Come True

Opening the tall glass doors, I entered an oasis of restorative pampering – spanning more than 73,000 square feet of stunning décor and incredible treatments and services. All – as Chairman Milanovich explained – with an emphasis on the unique healing powers and connection to body, mind and spirit that has helped the Agua Caliente thrive throughout the years.

Spacious lobbies and hallways lead to stylish indoor/outdoor relaxation areas landscaped with natural rock, California Washingtonian palm trees (native to the Coachella Valley’s natural oases) and commissioned art and sculpture. Earthy tones and custom décor utilizing the Agua Caliente’s cultural symbols evoke a desert serenity throughout.

My favorite Tribal design was the Snake, inlayed into the floor beneath a basket-style chandelier, in an alcove fronting the Sec-he Private Spa Suite. The snake signifies protection, I was told, a shape often woven into baskets to protect the contents.

The Signature Collagen Facial – Oh my!

I changed into the Spa at Sec-he signature robe – cozy, earth toned, light weight and environmentally friendly. “We looked for fabric that would take less time to launder and thus use less water,” Daniel Spencer, Spa Director, explained.  I retraced my steps to the lobby, then followed an attendant though airy spaces to one of the 15 posh treatment rooms for the signature Collagen Facial. It’s described as an “intensely rejuvenating treatment that minimizes visible lines and wrinkles, tightens and hydrates the skin for a firmer more radiant complexion.”

Boy, is it ever! My body rocked gently on the water relaxed by the LED color light therapy as the esthetician prepped my complexion. She covered my face with sheets of GM Collin brand collagen-infused fiber paper. “Paper is a better carrier than a cream,” Spencer explained later, “allowing the collagen to penetrate deeper and more evenly into the skin.” Next, my esthetician smoothed an aloe gel over the paper to “activate” the collagen, she said, helping it to penetrate my skin faster, and “boost” the collagen’s effectiveness. “The Collagen Facial has long results. It can last for weeks and weeks,” I was happy to hear Spencer say.

TAL-treatment room at spa at sec-he

“Your face is glowing!” “You look radiant!” “Younger!” My colleagues exclaimed without my even asking. All good, I decided.

My colleagues had all enjoyed massages. “The best massage of my life,” one said of the treatment she’d experienced on the crazy cool Gharieni Quartz massage table. Made with heated finely ground quartz and amber grains that gently contour the body, and a rolling air cushion to stretch the back. The table also tilts back and forth to shift the body as the masseuse works his/her magic. Wow! And I thought my LED color light therapy table was amazing. The quartz bed is also used with water cells to create the feeling of a water bed during The Spa at Sec-he’s signature Cupping Water Massage.

From Facial Bliss to Healing Heaven

Next, I indulged in the exclusive “Taking of the Waters” ritual. The Cahuilla word “Séc-he” translates to “the sound of boiling water” and as stewards of these ancient hot mineral springs, the Tribe has shared the waters’ healing power via this ritual for more than 130 years.
Easing into the 105-degree, thousand-year-old waters in one of the spa’s 22 Private Mineral Baths. I let my feet and legs gently float, as the water – direct from 8,000 feet under the ground in its most pure form.  It infused my body with calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfate, carbonate and other naturally healing minerals. In world class style – while each bath chamber is private – you don’t feel enclosed because sunlight shines through the window-wall from a private garden. Akin to soaking in a natural palm oasis.

The water is powerful. Proven to increase circulation, soothe skin conditions, reduce inflammation, ease tight muscles, and provide an overall sense of wellbeing, according to Spencer. A soft knock on my door told me my 15 minutes of hot mineral water rejuvenation was up.

A Spa Journey to the Next Level

Now I was free to journey through all the wellness offerings – an uncommonly large number compared to your average day spa. Best of all – you don’t have to book a massage, facial or other special service to enjoy it. The “Spa at Sec-he Taking the Waters Day Pass” incudes the hot mineral water ritual and state-of-the-art spa amenities.

Included in the Day Pass is the amazing Acoustic Wellness vibrational loungers which instantly soothes your busy mind and relaxes your entire body, and Acoustic Zero-gravity vibration chairs. It also includes a Salt Cave to help relieve skin conditions, stress, allergies and respiratory infections, a state-of-the-art Fitness Center, a Menthol inhalation sauna with a cold experience shower, and Eucalyptus steam room.

The-Spa-at-Sec-he-Salt-Cave

“We wanted to go beyond the norm and provide an all-inclusive experience you wouldn’t find at most spas,” Spencer explained. “If you find these amenities at other spas at all, they’re often add-ons for extra money.” Not here. “We purposefully included extras so you can experience “no-touch therapy for deeper states of relaxation and goal-oriented wellness.”

“Emotional Reset.” “Power Nap.” “Awareness.” “Journey of the Mind.” Swinging my legs up onto a wave-shaped vibrational lounger in the Acoustic Wellness room, I donned head phones and chose among the musical beats to promote whatever mood I desired. I enjoyed several settings: “Touch,” “Energy,” “Deep” and “Gentle.” Then to the advanced “Power Nap” and “Awareness.” There’s no time limit to how long you can enjoy these incredible Gharieni wellness chairs.

Moving to the acoustic zero-gravity vibration chair, I zoned out to vibrations massaging up and down my back. The latest and greatest in “binaural (sound wave) therapy,” Spencer said. Soon, the Halotherapy Salt Cave was calling my name. Its salt-block walls glowed a soothing ruddy color as I inhaled tiny cleansing salt particles to rejuvenate my respiratory system and skin.

Spa at Sec-he Pool Party!

All this wellness gave us an appetite. No worries. We relaxed over drinks and goodies under one of the four luxury cabanas at the sunny Main Pool. With nearly 17,000 square feet of pool deck, there’s plenty of first-come first-serve lounge chairs. But the cabanas, with sumptuous teak furnishings, day beds, misters, and a fridge, are a wonderful added touch for a girls’ getaway, pre-bridal party, families. Any excuse, really, for luxe lounging. Each cabana holds up to six people, so together groups of up to 24 can enjoy the cabana comforts. More than a swimming/sunning area, the Main Pool is a relaxation destination, anchored by the large free-form freshwater Main Pool with a rock waterfall and grotto, plus a separate zero-edge hot mineral pool, a whirlpool and the poolside Pál Bar and café.

I ordered a white wine (the Pál Bar also has cocktails, loads of health-forward smoothies and locally sourced entrees and snacks) and the delicious Ahi Poke Bowl. Clinking our glasses, my colleagues and I toasted to an incredible day at an incredible spa. And to our return!

Sec he Spa_outdoor pool

Because – There’s More

After all, we’d only experienced one of the spa’s ultra-special treatments. Next time, perhaps we’ll take the Floatation Experience to destress and reset. Floating in a tank with minimal gravity, sensory stimulation, and temperature, buoyed by huge concentrations of Epsom Salts. Or the whole-body Cryotherapy, immersed for three minutes (or less) in a tank of minus 230-degree water! Enthusiasts say it’s wonderful for circulation, muscle recovery, full range motion and reduced inflammation. Maybe hit the Life Fitness treadmills or Hammer Strength weight machines in the Fitness Center. Indulge in a body scrub or wrap.

Or enjoy a mani/pedi, hair re-style and other out-of-the-ordinary services at The Spa at Sec-he Hair and Wellness Salon. The unique Yume scalp-treatment lounger and five-step Yume Spa Mist II technology provides a “Full Head Spa Experience” – to encourage mental relaxation, and deliver “unparalleled results to your hair,” Spencer enthused.

How did I feel after my Spa at Sec-he spa day? Relaxed. Refreshed. And unexpectedly Focused – for several days afterward.

Indian Canyons Trails Guide

Indian Canyons is a beautiful nature reserve located in South Palm Springs. It is owned and operated by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians as reservation land. The park spans over 31,500 acres and is home to breathtaking canyons, unique rock formations, and lush vegetation.

The history of Indian Canyons dates back thousands of years when the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians settled in the area. The Cahuilla people have a long and rich history in the region, and they used the canyons as a source of water and food. They also believed that the canyons contained powerful spirits that protected their tribe.

In the early 1900s, the Agua Caliente Tribe began to take steps to protect their sacred land, and Indian Canyons became a nature reserve in 1969. Today, visitors can explore the canyons on foot or horseback and experience the natural beauty of the area while learning about the history and culture of the Cahuilla people.

Indian Canyons is home to several hiking trails, including Andreas Canyon, Murray Canyon, and Palm Canyon. Each trail offers a unique experience and stunning views of the canyons and surrounding landscape. It is a beautiful and important nature reserve that offers visitors a unique glimpse into the history and culture of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. It features more than 60 miles of hiking trails.

Purely Palm Springs Brunch

Orange you glad you visited Trio? The eternally sunny hue of this Palm Springs mainstay will brighten your appetite, morning, noon and night! All rhyming aside, the hearty offerings at Trio will triangulate your hunger and send it packing. Try their fried egg sandwich with Applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, tomato, and roasted red pepper aioli on a Croissant served with fresh fruit.

Just down the street in downtown Palm Springs is another luscious landmark shimmers into view. Lulu California Bistro tosses an array of yay, including everything from fresh greens to feisty proteins. Best known for their their three course prefix weekend brunch menu, which includes an appetizer, entrée and dessert. Add champagne or mimosas with complementary refills.

Maleza’s crave-worthy offerings include Baja classics such as chilaquiles and queso fundido to churros and fresh made pastries to cure a sweet tooth. Crafted by Chef Yssac Ramirez, the buzzy hotspot will be offering a selection of brunch cocktails, standouts include the Rise & Shine, a spiked cold brew with reposado tequila and Mr. Black, and the Bloody Maria, Drift’s modern twist on the bloody mary. With both indoor and outdoor seating, weekend brunch can be enjoyed on the airy patio overlooking the pool while soaking in the desert sun.

One of the most unique joys of our downtown area is how cozily situated it is with the mountains that tower overhead. Get up close and geological with the San Jacintos by brunching at Spencer’s, located in the Tennis Neighborhood. Nestled firmly in the foothills, this must-visit vista gets creative with their top-shelf ingredients. Take lobster, for example – you can savor it in omelet form, atop a Benedict, sandwiched in a club, cavorting in a salad, or chilling in gazpacho. Now that’s what we call an ocean of variety!

Nestles in Uptown Design District across from Trio is Jake’s, locally owned hip American bistro that offers a weekend brunch in a private outdoor courtyard.  From egg dishes, to sandwiches, to salads, they offer a nice mixed variety for any time of day.

Brunch By Popular Demand

Remember when we implied there was no need to schedule a darn thing on your day off? Well, we may have exaggerated. Certain PS brunch spots are immensely popular, so you should plan accordingly to ensure a seat at the tantalizing table.

pancakes at Cheeky's

Cheeky’s, for example, doesn’t take reservations, but they will take your breath away. Ease into the morning with a bloody Mary and/or margarita. Now that your eyes are sufficiently opened, gaze upon a plate of custard cheesy scrambled eggs.

But let’s cut the baloney and talk turkey: brunch = bacon.

Enjoy next-level nomnomnom with Cheeky’s bacon flight. Five flavors, an array of textures, and scores of meal-mates trying to “share” with you. Back off and get your own!

Ahem, where were we?

Oh, yes: on the topic of in-demand eateries, be sure to be early at Wilma & Frieda. Their upscale ingredients blend brilliantly with down-home hospitality to create a buzz-worthy brunch experience. Choose from country fried filet mignon or griddled meatloaf and eggs, but leave room for dessert! W&F has plenty of treats to satiate any sweet tooth.

Speaking of indulgence (when AREN’T we?), remember to reserve a table at Norma’s, located stylishly at The Parker. Fashion your feast to fit your vibe, be it cheeseburger-casual or caviar-chic. Brunch it your way!

Make Some Mimosa Memories

There are few combinations as heavenly as orange juice and champagne. Peanut butter and chocolate, perhaps? Maybe blue jeans and world peace? But that might be a tad complicated to accomplish this early in the day, so let’s stick with mimosas for the moment.

Bottomless bubbly awaits at various brunch destinations throughout Palm Springs. For a raucous round of brunch, check out Pinocchio’s. They have unlimited champagne for under six bucks (90 minute limit), and that’s no lie!

pinoccios

Add some bonding to your bottomlessness at Bongo Johnny’s, a friendly and festive dining destination. It’s the ideal gathering spot for friends, family and anyone who’s up for good-time grub! Breakfast is served until 4pm daily. Did we mention their fried chicken benedict?

Get exotic at one of our many internationally themed brunch spots. Tropicale brings island indulgence to the desert with a wave of champagne and choices. Sweeten up your stay with blueberry waffles slathered in ricotta lemon cream or try Mary’s Farm Herbed Chicken Hash & Poached Eggs. Fulfillment ahoy!

Brunch Show-Offs

As you’re waiting for your next pre-noon cocktail, take in a show at one of the myriad theatrical brunches in Palm Springs. Oscar’s puts on performances throughout the week, but brunch is when things really heat up. Feeling peckish? Well then, ogle the pecs of Mimosa Men on Saturdays and then cop some attitude at their Bitchiest Brunch on Sundays.

And if you want to go that extra mile, hike up your hose and hitch a ride on PS Air. Tucked (pun intended) behind the Bouschet wine shop, this aviation themed speakeasy recreates the heyday of high-flying fashion. Fierce flight attendants entertain your brain with gonzo routines and meals served on airline trays to keep the illusion aloft. Disco Boozy Brunch is served every Sunday beginning at 11 am.

ps air show brunch

For a truly one-of-a-kind brunch experience, dig into PS Underground. Whether you’re in the mood for dirty bingo or good clean(ish) Broadway fare, this troupe is triumphant. The chef introduces each course of bespoke food and drink, and every morsel is themed to the show that plays out all around you. It is a creative space like no other, and it simmers with flavor personified.  These always change, so check back often.

PS Drag Brunch is now serving up some sass for brunch every Saturday and Sunday at Saguaro Palm Springs. A place so cool even the tables have drag queen names.

Diners, Delis & Deliciousness

If classic diners are your jam, explore away! From John’s to Rick’s to Sherman’s Deli to Billy Reed’s, the gang’s all here! Vintage modernism comes to life in these throwback tastemakers, so order your brunch with a side of style.

You really can’t go wrong with the midmorning majesty of Palm Springs’ foodie scene. And to think: the day has just begun. Lucky you…
