Palm Springs Loves Drag Queens

The Empowering Impact of Palm Springs Drag Queens

Palm Springs is a city that prides itself on its welcoming attitude towards diversity. The community celebrates and embraces differences in people of all backgrounds and cultures, making it a destination for people from all over the world. And we love our drag queens!

Drag Now. Drag Forever.

Taking a stand against anti-drag bills and LGBTQ+ extremism and to support the historic form of artistic expression and advocacy, Greater Palm Springs Pride organizers also announced the Pride Week theme is ‘Drag Now. Drag Forever.’ Pride is November 3 – 5, 2023.

A year-round extravaganza, Palm Springs celebrates all. For all those who are under attack, including straight allies and entertainers, that in this anti-drag, anti-LGBTQ+ era, Palm Springs will be a city of sanctuary and freedom of expression of all forms.

Greater Palm Springs Pride president and CEO Ron deHarte, who is also a City Council member said in a statement, “‘Drag Now. Drag Forever.’ is a theme that calls on the community to unite and support the drag community. Drag is not a crime. Our country has a rich history of drag as an artistic expression, standard of activism, and the backbone of fundraising in the community. We call on everyone to support the drag community and fight all anti-LGBTQ+ bills that threaten the freedom and equality of all.”

A Palm Springs Insider’s Guide

Experience Palm Springs like a Local.

Welcome to Palm Springs, a desert oasis that offers visitors an abundance of sunshine, stunning scenery, and a vibrant culture. This is an extraordinary place, and locals choose to live here over in so many other popular cities. Here is your Palm Springs local’s guide to truly experience the city like a local.

Stay Local

Midcentury modern architecture is one of the defining features of Palm Springs. The style emerged in the post-World War II era, characterized by clean lines, simple forms, and a focus on functionality. It was a departure from the ornate, decorative styles that had previously dominated architecture.

Locals who own midcentury modern homes have meticulously restored them and kept their original style of footprints, ensuring that they will continue to be appreciated for generations to come. A great way to experience Palm Springs like a local is to rent a midcentury home, and there are many to choose from. We recommend booking through a local vacation rental agency for the best overall service.

Shop Local Vintage Vibes

With so many locals owning midcentury modern homes, what better way to decorate them than a visit to a local vintage shop? With so many to choose from, Palm Springs’ vintage shopping advantage is truly endless.

The thrill of the hunt delivers vintage and contemporary goodies at Revivals, a local-favorite thrift shop benefiting the Desert AIDS Project. Be sure to peruse the really cool costume jewelry. Shoes, clothes, home furnishings, vintage ceramics, dinnerware, lighting, pictures. You name it, it’s here.

Continuing along South Palm Canyon Drive to East Sunny Dunes Road, this shopping enclave features fabulous finds in nearly a dozen diverse shops. The Sunny Dunes Antique Mall is “6,000 square feet of retail happiness.” More than 40 independently owned shops overflow with goodies from mid-century to contemporary.

The Antiques Galleries of Palm Springs features a curated collection, from old gas pumps and macrame to ship’s wheels, Magnavox stereo consoles, and ’60s clown paintings—remember them? Plus an ever-changing inventory of vintage furniture, clothing, sculpture, and glassware.

Eat Locally Owned

All our recommendations are locally owned restaurants. There are no chain restaurants here. Locals know the owners, and they love that connection to where they live.

Trio has been a staple in Palm Springs dining and cocktails since 2009. Their tagline literally is, “Where Palm Springs Eats.” And it’s true: Locals love the owner, Tony Marchese, and often run into friends in the bar or at a table. This American brasserie offers an extensive menu with something for everyone, including classic comfort food dishes and modern twists on traditional favorites.

What we love about Eight4Nine Restaurant & Lounge is its huge lounge, which serves a special and full bar menu. There are no reservations, and it has a thriving happy hour locals love. The wait staff becomes like family and knows your name (and your preferred beverage!). The usual?

Eight4Nine Restaurant

El Mirasol in south Palm Springs is a favorite of Barry Manilow, who lives there. This Mexican restaurant serves delicious margaritas and traditional dishes such as carne asada and chile rellenos. I hear rumors they also cater for Barry…

Other local favorite spots include The Tropicale, the hidden patio at John Henry’s Café, meeting on the second floor at Bongo Johnny’s, and a quick American diner style meal at John’s RestaurantThe Tropicale, the hidden patio at John Henry’s Café, meeting on the second floor at Bongo Johnny’s, and a quick American diner-style the Purple Room Supper Club. It originally opened in 1960 and was a popular hangout spot for celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.  Now owned by entertainer Michael Holmes, the Purple Room offers a unique dining experience where you can enjoy live jazz, pop, and cabaret performances while you dine.

The Arenas District is Palm Spring’s answer to Castro Street. Locals meet friends at one of the many bars for drinks, dancing, and a variety of entertainment. Blackbook Bar is a great place to start, with a great menu and award-winning craft cocktails (but without the attitude). Across the street is the popular nightclub Hunters Palm Springs. This is an excellent place for clubbing. Not only do they have go-go dancers and drag shows, but they also enjoy a huge dance floor with disco lighting to dance the night away. Chill Bar, just next door in the Arenas District, serves up shows, parties, food, and drinks. Two spaces offer patrons a range of entertainment and nightlife options.

You will also find Quadz Video BarStreetbar, and Dicks’ on Arenas.

Take A Downtown Walking Tour

Exploring Palm Springs on foot is a great way to soak in the city’s desert views and architecture. This charming city is known for its midcentury architecture, desert landscapes, and Hollywood history. Let’s explore some of the highlights on a downtown walking tour.

Head towards the Palm Springs Art Museum.

Palm Springs Art MuseumExplore the public art that surrounds the blocks in front of the museum.

Get your picture taken in front of the 26-foot Marilyn Monroe statue on Museum Way. The “Forever Marilyn” sculpture, designed by artist Seward Johnson, depicts Monroe in her famous pose from the movie The Seven Year Itch: standing over a subway grate with her skirt blowing up.

Marilyn Monroe

Stroll through the Downtown Park. It is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Opened in 2019, the park covers 1.8 acres and features a variety of amenities, such as a large grassy area for picnics and events, a children’s play area, a splash pad, and shaded seating areas. The park also hosts events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and outdoor movie screenings. It is a great place to relax, unwind, and enjoy the beautiful Palm Springs weather.

Downtown Park

Head over to Palm Canyon Drive and cross the road.

Walk along the east side as you make your way south. Just to your left is Destination PSP, which is a great place to pick up Palm Springs-style merchandise.

Stroll down the palm-lined street and check out unique boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants. Take in the midcentury modern architecture of Palm Springs.

Continue South on Palm Canyon

You will pass the historic Plaza Theatre. It has hosted countless film premieres and live performances since 1936 and is currently being restored. It’s tucked just behind Brandini Toffee, which is locally owned and a must-stop for sweet tooth lovers.

Plaza Theatre front

You can continue towards the historic La Plaza shopping district.

La Plaza is the first open-air shopping center in the United States. The design allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful desert climate while browsing the shops and dining al fresco. The center also features a central courtyard with fountains and palm trees, creating a serene oasis in the city’s heart.

It was designed by renowned architect Paul R. Williams in 1936 and originally served as a community gathering place. Today, it has been renovated and reimagined as a unique shopping and dining destination featuring a mix of high-end retailers, restaurants, and art galleries.

La Plaza

Continue South toward Arenas Road.

Several popular restaurants line the street. Lulu California Bistro has a large outdoor seating area and fits in well with its midcentury yet modern vibe. Just past Lulu is Las Casuelas Terraza, the oldest continuously running restaurant in Palm Springs since 1958, offering a traditional Mexican menu.

las casuelas

Other restaurants include Thai House, Pomme Frite, and Sol Agave.

Cross the street at Baristo.

On the corner is the Palm Springs Architecture and Design Center. It is dedicated to the rich history of architecture in the Palm Springs area. The museum’s collection features a wide range of exhibits and displays exploring modernist design evolution in Palm Springs. In addition to its exhibits, the museum hosts various educational programs and special events throughout the year. From lectures and workshops to walking tours and film screenings, the museum offers something for everyone interested in the history and future of architecture in Palm Springs.

Cross South Palm Canyon to the east side, where you will see Fuzion Five on the corner.

Stroll north as if you are heading back to the Palm Springs Art Museum. Stop by the Palm Springs Historical Society (check hours, as they vary). Not only will you learn more about Palm Springs’s rich history, but they also offer seasonal walking tours.

Continue North to the Sonny Bono statue.

Sonny Bono was a renowned musician and actor and served as the city’s mayor in the 1980s. The statue depicts him in his signature pose, with his arms outstretched and a big smile. The statue holds sentimental value for many residents of Palm Springs, who remember him as a devoted public servant who worked tirelessly to improve the community. He founded the Palm Springs International Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.

The Walk of Stars is a series of bronze stars embedded in the sidewalk along Palm Canyon Drive, honoring celebrities who have contributed to the entertainment industry. You can spot the stars of Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, and Frank Sinatra, among others. The Walk of Stars is an integral part of Palm Springs’ heritage and serves as a testament to the city’s rich cultural history. Shhh! Palm Springs Speakeasy Scene Just Expanded

Knock Knock

By Kevin Perry

The best thing about a secret is spilling it. You get a guilty thrill every time you divulge confidential information to someone you trust. That’s the unique charm of a speakeasy. You feel like part of an exclusive club, yet you’re being inclusive every time you welcome a new friend or loved one into the bar of your choice.

During prohibition, the speakeasy served as a concealed way for Americans to access alcohol and partake in the nightlife that comes with it. When, with the passing of the 18th amendment, alcohol became effectively banned in the U.S., out-in-the-open bars were replaced by these discreet pubs. Today, speakeasy is essentially a bar meant to be shrouded in secrecy, often hidden, and embodying a prohibition vibe with dim lighting. The Palm Springs speakeasy scene is fun a growing.

New Hidden Gem on Arenas

And there’s a gangbuster new option ring-a-ding-dinging its way to the popular Arenas Road. The new kid on the block is so shy that even its owners prefer not to publicize it. There’s no name on the door and it’s tricky to find. When asked for comment, they stayed defiantly off-the-record, then sent a down-low/high-society invitation to the watering hole’s website.

So, you didn’t hear it here, but a little birdy told us that the new speakeasy is a gregarious gas! Characterized by dim lighting and shimmering possibilities, the jumpin’ joint caters to the whims of yesteryear rather than adhering to the trends of today. They sling suds according to your taste buds; the menu is a who’s who of hearty concoctions.

Even though we’re still technically off the record, we will paraphrase one of the owners, D.L. (no fooling – those are his real initials!). He is less concerned with putting a spotlight on fancy bartenders and mixology fads and more interested in pleasing his patrons’ palates.

Memo to D.L.: When you’re ready to give us an official statement about your bee’s-knees barroom, we’re all ears! In the meantime, let’s take a stroll through the libation-soaked landscape of the Palm Springs speakeasy scene…

Hint: Blackbook is across the street.

Throwback Thrills

Travel back to a century ago, when flappers flapped and zoot suits jitterbugged into the pop culture zeitgeist. The roaring 20s are still roaring at Bar Cecil, a blast from the past in every sense of the term. “It’s right on the edge of overstimulation,” explains proprietor Nate VanDeventer of the speakeasy’s cacophonous kitsch. “It’s nonstop conversation pieces if you’re sitting at the bar.”

You’ll marvel at the medieval theme at Counter Reformation, a tucked away hidden wine bar at The Parker. They specialize in small-batch wines from around the world, as well as rare and unique spirits. Counter Reformation offers a sophisticated and inviting ambiance that is sure to impress. If you feel you’ve been too indulgent, there is a wooden confessional in the back to rid you of all your guilt.

counter_reformation_

You can also quench your thirst for 1930s opulence at Seymour’s, a Palm Springs speakeasy tucked away at Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. To enter Seymour’s, you have to walk through the kitchen and find the unmarked door that leads to the speakeasy. Once inside, you’ll be transported back in time with the vintage décor and dim lighting. It’s named after Seymour Williams, who was a notorious rum runner during the prohibition era. The cocktail menu at Seymour’s is impressive, featuring classic drinks like the Old Fashioned and Manhattan, as well as creative concoctions like the Grapefruit Collins and the Spicy Margarita.

interior of bar

Fast-forward to the fifties and study these studies: you’ll feel like you’re in a dashing den at Del Rey, a wood-paneled wonder of restraint and refinement. Be sure to try the appropriately named Shy Rickey cocktail and simmer in the secretive vibes of this cozy kiosk. You might need to ask for directions at the reception desk of  the Villa Royal resort as this Palm Springs speakeasy is tucked away in the back past the pool.

Similarly stealthy, check out Paul Bar/Food. From the outside, it’s a very unassuming Vista Chino storefront, but once you step inside, you’re transported to a bygone era of robust rye whiskey and rib-sticking fare. Order the porkchop and chase it with a Black Manhattan.

paul bar

As we trek further into midcentury mastery, PS Air captures a swinging 60s style. This Palm Springs speakeasy takes the form of a retro airline, complete with compact cuisine and jumbo joy. Drag performers decked out in vintage threads dominate the aisle, blurring the line between throwback and thrillingly current. You discretely board through Bouschet next door and they have an extensive entertainment line-up.

ps air experience

And now that you’re firmly in the pilot’s seat, navigate your way to Truss & Twine in the heart of the Uptown Design District. Get a bespoke beverage designed specifically to your appetite. The expert bartenders begin by asking if you’re a clear liquor aficionado or more of an earthy elixir type. From there, you guide your own journey into nostalgia… It discretely opens at 6 pm and offers late night sips until 12:30 am.

bar seating

What’s New? Old-School Esteem, That’s What!

Everything old fashioned is new again at the latest additions to the Palm Springs pub tableau. Tailor Shop crafts cocktails with painstaking passion. The golden hued barware sparkles amidst the muted décor, beckoning you to explore each shadowy corner as you down your third highball (but who’s counting?). The entrance is quietly tucked behind Bootlegger Tiki and surrounded by shrubs, so it feels like it’s a secret entrance.

Tailor Shop int.

Though technically not a speakeasy, Clandestino evokes the haunted saloon from The Shining, but don’t be scared! Soothe yourself with a flight of margaritas that run the gourmet gamut from juicy watermelon to spicy cucumber. Their street food paves a path to perfection, but be sure to leave room for dessert – the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich is to die for.

Clandestino bar

And bringing our focus full-circle, don’t forget the aforementioned, brand-spanking-new unnamed Arenas Road speakeasy. There are so many options if you’re a citizen of the evening. Oops, we’ve said too much. Time to go back on the DL. See you later, alligators.

The event features multiple pools and stages spread across several hotels in the city, including the Renaissance, Margaritaville, and Saguaro Hotel.

Palm Springs Progressive Dinner – “Contemporary & Classic”

Part 4 – in a Delicious 4-part Series

By Barbara Beckley

If you’re looking for a fun and unique way to experience the best of Palm Springs cuisine, consider trying out a progressive dinner! This culinary adventure involves visiting multiple restaurants throughout the evening, enjoying a different course at each location. Here are some ideas for a contemporary and classic progressive dinner in Palm Springs.

Contemporary & Classic  – Stop 1

Boozehounds

Get a head start – at Boozehounds, a stylish new find with Happy Hour 2 -5 p.m. seven days a week! Opened in mid-2021 on North Palm Canyon Drive, its name connotes the partner-owners’ love for their and everyone’s doggies. And love of exceptionally fine wine, spirits, and food – SoCal cuisine with a Japanese influence – so unique and tasty that Boozehounds is also featured in the inaugural 2022 Palm Springs Michelin Guide.

Enter through the “Doggy Door” and pick your space among 7,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor high-ceiled style including dining room tables, velvet booths, the bar and lounge, and dog-friendly open-air Atrium Cabana Bar & Patio. Admire the San Jacinto Mountain views. Laugh at the whimsical hand-drawn signage like “Where Dogs Bring Their Human’s” and “Do It Doggy Style.” Many guests don’t. But if you do bring your dog(s), there are four menu items just for them, like the pooch-popular “Doggie TV Dinner” of beef meatloaf, dog treat gravy, peas, and carrots.

Join the theme with a “Go Fetch Frose!” of Tito’s vodka, sparking rose and strawberry basil cordial. Or better – “Aunt Donna’s Dirty Poodle,” with Akashi Single malt whiskey, Nigori Sake, house-made Yuzu-Meyer lemon shrub, house-made miso-mirin syrup, and chocolate bitters. Bow Wowsers! For nibbles, the “Kimchi Fries” are amazing and creative, with house Kimchi, beer cheese and micro cilantro. Even better when you add pork belly or short rib or adobo chicken. Also, a fabulous share: the “Ricotta Board,” with grilled Ube focaccia house buttermilk ricotta – say what? – blueberry compote, candied lemon peel, house whole milk ricotta, crispy prosciutto, and Thai basil gremolata.

Contemporary & Classic – Stop 2

Spencer’s

Then… make dinner history! At Spencer’s Restaurant at the Mountain, a five-minute drive in the heart of downtown. Elegant and friendly, it’s location has been a Palm Springs dining tradition and gathering place with celebs like Katharine Hepburn, Bob Hope, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and everyone since opening in the 1930s at the historic Palm Springs Tennis Club at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains. Choose a patio table beneath beautifully manicured trees and twinkly lights on the charming (doggie friendly) garden patio. Or in the dining room’s relaxed sophistication. Perusing the large 4-star menu and Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence 2022 wine list, you’ll understand why people agree “the ambiance is rivaled only by the cuisine.”

spencer's patio

Maybe start with the “Sauteed Crab Cakes.” Maryland blue crab meat with heirloom tomato, lemon butter sauce, capers, and tiny greens with truffle oil. Yes! Or, splurge and indulge in the “American Paddlefish Caviar” with a shot of vodka! Also wonderful, the “Chilled Gazpacho,” with Maine Lobster, using vine-ripened tomato, yellow peppers, and cucumber essence.

Every entrée is superb. Favorites include the “Pan Fried Chilean Seabass,” with braised fennel, artichokes, oven tomatoes, saffron sauce, crispy leeks, and a side of gratinee potatoes and green beans. The “Black Angus Filet Mignon,” and the “Australian Rock Lobster Tail.” But you may not be back for a while. So don’t ignore the amazing “Sonoma Breast of Duck,” with Yukon gold potato puree with oranges, fig & date relish, green beans, Bordeaux cherries and raspberry demi-glace. Or “New Zealand Rack of Lamb,” with whole grain mustard-herbs crusted and gratin potatoes, green beans, and red wine demi-glace. For pasta lovers, consider the “Wild Mushroom Risotto” of Arborio rice, tossed with fresh garlic, shallot, truffle oil and sliced tomatoes. Heavenly. And “Spaghettini Carbonara” with crispy pancetta, parmesan cream and sweet peas.

Classic & Contemporary – Stop 3

GiGi’s

Go out with a bang! Join the party at GiGi’s Restaurant and Bar about two miles down South Palm Canyon Drive. It’s always a blast – especially on weekends – ever since this high-energy indoor-outdoor attention-getter opened in late 2021 at the Sonder V Hotel. Relax outside under the stars and twinkly lights around the cheery fire-pit in GiGi’s Poolside Garden. Listen – maybe dance – to the DJ or live entertainment harkening to the ‘50s Rat Pack scene on Friday and Saturday nights.

GiGi's interior

For dessert, follow the menu’s retro salute with a contemporary twist and share its two desserts: the large slice of “Classic Cheese Cake.” Ask for vanilla bean ice cream on the side. And equally good “Tiramisu.”

gigi's tiramisu

Accompanied, yes please, by one of GiGi’s re-imagined drinks from the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Maybe light and refreshing like “The Birds & The Bees (Knees),” with Empress Gin, organic lavender honey, lemon, and egg white. And “Pornstar Paloma” of Casamigos Blanco Tequila, lychee juice, lime, and ruby-red grape fruit soda. Better yet, go stirred & boozy (as the menu says) with the “Sun-Burnt Old Fashioned” of Smoked bourbon, burnt orange Demerara Syrup and bitters. Or shaken & boozy sipping “GiGi’s Martini,” with Absolut Elyx Vodka, house brine, and – Oh my! – a crispy fried olive.

Palm Springs Progressive Dinner – “Old & New”

Part 3 – In a Delicious 4-part Series

By Barbara Beckley

A progressive dinner is a fun way to experience multiple restaurants in one evening. This type of dinner party involves moving from one restaurant to the next, enjoying a different course at each stop. To spice things up, you can mix old and new restaurants on your route. Here’s how you could plan a progressive dinner with old and new restaurants:

Old & New – Stop 1

Las Casuelas Original

Begin at the beginning – with margaritas and 100-year-old recipes at oldie and oh so goodie Las Casuelas. Opened in 1958 Las Casuelas Original is still in the same location on North Palm Canyon Drive (plus two other locations). This Mexican mainstay is now in its fourth generation, dishing out family recipes dating back to matriarch Maria, who cooked for pre-Depression copper miners in Arizona using her famous earthenware pots and pans (cazuelas). Authentic décor and traditionally clad servers make you feel like Maria is still in the room.

Las Casuelas Terraza

Pull up a high-top chair under the palapa patio (or inside at a table) at lively Las Casuelas Terraza established in 1979 in a vintage Spanish Mediterranean building on South Palm Canyon Drive. Rock out to the live band. Watch Palm Canyon’s sidewalk action. And enjoy the largest – and some of the most diverse – margaritas in town. Choose from eight margarita styles including nine fruit flavors (think banana, water melon), and more than 100 types of tequila. Maybe blended with imported Triple Sec and Gold Tequila. Or the “Scratch Margarita,” with El Jimado Blanco on the rocks. For the designated driver – the “Top Shelf Margarita,” with Cuervo Tradicional Reposado Tequila, Grand Marnier and Cointreau is a must! No surprise, it’s limited to three per guest.

las casuelas

To share:

“Grandma Fajardo’s Guacamole.” Thick and creamy, the recipe has been handed down for generations. Also, owner Patty Delgado’s “Fresh Fiesta Guacamole,” made with diced, fresh avocado; onions, chopped tomatoes and cilantro.

Las Casuelas Original guacamole

Of course, the “Nachos Rancheros” with crispy flour tortilla chips drowning in melted cheese, diced tomatoes, onions, sliced jalapeno peppers, sour cream, refried beans, and guacamole. And the unexpected “Ceviche.” Lime-marinated shrimp (not white fish) and diced avocado, tossed with scallions, Roma tomatoes, onions, and a dash of Tajin.

Old & New  – Stop 2

Bar Cecil

For the main, take a two-minute drive along South Palm Canyon Drive to Palm Springs’ most talked-about new restaurant – Bar Cecil! Helmed by James Beard House guest-chef Executive Chef-Partner Gabe Woo, this intimate, whimsically chic hot spot has been the go-to from the minute it opened in 2022. Named after British fashion photographer, painter, interior decorator and bon vivant Cecil Beaton, Bar Cecil does its namesake proud. Starring as one of Palm Springs’ first Michelin restaurants recommended in the inaugural 2022 Palm Springs Michelin Guide.

Bar Cecil

Sit at the cushy bar. Or a table. Parties of six or less, please. (It’s that intimate and that popular.) Enjoy a cocktail. They’re impressive. Like “The Fifty Dollar Martini.” No joke, it’s $50. Totally worth it with Jean-Charles Boisset Vodka, Alessio Dry Vermouth, and house-made pickled onion. Wines from around the world. Bubbles, perhaps Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut. Even beer – from France: Kronenbourg French Lager.

bar-cecil drinks

Have everyone order a different dish so you can experience more than one. Chef Woo’s incredible “Westholme Australian Wagyu Tomahawk Steak.” The “Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops” with celery root puree, carrot, caulilini, and Vadouvan curry beurre blanc. The best pork chop ever. “Smoked Bone-In Duroc Pork Chop,” with potatoes au gratin, broccolini and seasoned chutney. For veggie fans, the “King Trumpet Mushrooms” with butternut squash risotto, peas, plant butter, vegan Parmesan, and basil. Sides? You bet. Perhaps the “Charred Green Beans” with fresh ground pepper blend, and roasted garlic.

Old & New  – Stop 3

4 Saints Rooftop Bar & Restaurant

Top off the evening with inspiring views from Palm Springs’ tallest building, paired with southern-inspired desserts and creative after-dinner drinks at the 4 Saints Rooftop Bar & Restaurant. Opened in 2018 atop the seventh floor of the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel, this savvy enclave mixes southern comfort food with avant garde techniques – so well in fact – it’s featured in the inaugural 2022 Palm Springs Michelin Guide. Choose high-top tables outside overlooking the city. Movie-star like circular booths inside. Or the view-filled bar – accented with huge golden flamingos.

Flamingos

Flamingos – what?! Yes, siree. And each is ready to make your night. Order the “Flamboyance of Flamingos” and one will be delivered to your table filled with champagne, Absolut Elyx vodka, Billet blanc and fresh grapefruit, with a ladle to pour into all your glasses. Serves six to eight, but who’s counting?

Or select from countless libations from Courvoisier VSOP to Ramos Pinto 30 Year Tawny Port, even Absinthe. Put a smile on your face with handcrafted cocktails like “Born to Rum,” with Plantation 3 Stars rum, Aperol, orgeat, lemon, tarragon, and egg white. Or “Ciao Baby,” with gin, Giffard Crème de Peche, prosecco and rosemary. Toast to the desert with the “Highway 111 Old Fashioned” of date-infused Evan Williams bourbon, Sazerac rye and Xocolati mole bitters.

For dessert, think rich, creamy, gooey in the best Southern tradition. Order several and share. For sure the two-person “Chocolate Whiskey Date Cake,” “Flower Pots Sorbet and Ice Cream Inspiration,” and assorted dreamy Crème Brulés.

Dining & Drinks at Caliente Tropics

From Tropical to South-of-the-Border

Caliente Tropics Resort is a retro-style hotel known for its Polynesian-themed decor. It offers a variety of accommodations, including guestrooms, suites, and bungalows, perfect for couples, families, or groups.

The resort also features three excellent on-site restaurants: the Sansho’s, La Fern, and The Reef. They are located next to the resort, so easy access to all. While La Fern and The Reef are more cocktail-forward, they all offer delicious food and drinks. In addition, they all have Happy Hour!

Meet Owner Rory Snyder

Rory was a popular mixologist at Trio Restaurant and Wang’s in the Desert, creating craft cocktails. While at Trio, he became friends with SHAG artist Josh Agle and his business partner Jay Nailor, owner of the SHAG store. The SHAG store is right next door to Trio. This helped drive his enthusiasm for midcentury modern and Tiki styles.

In 2008, Rory decided to share his love of all things Tiki by founding and hosting the annual “Tiki Caliente” at Caliente Tropics Resort, which takes place every May.

In 2013, he created another annual event, “Mod Palm Springs,” which celebrates midcentury style with a Tiki twist.

After collecting so much Polynesian artwork, artifacts and furnishings, he co-authored “The Cocktail Compendium” with SHAG in 2013.

He then came to Caliente Tropics Resorts to be their restaurant proprietor and continue to produce fun events. Since then, he has opened his restaurant and two tropical-themed bars.

Sancho’s

Sancho’s has the “bones” of the former Sambo’s Pancake House and plays off the 1964 history of the former coffee shop that operated there through the mid-80s. It’s similar to what the Ace Hotel did with King’s Highway, a prior midcentury-style Denny’s. Playing on the name, Sancho’s is now a popular Mexican restaurant.

It offers traditional Mexican cuisine, including tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and fajitas. One dish you won’t find on other local Mexican menus is Queso Fondido, Mexico’s delicious version of fondue, which makes a great appetizer. There is also a large selection of soups and salads. You’ll find a veggie menu and a kid’s menu.

Sancho’s opens at 11 a.m. for lunch and 8 a.m. on the weekends for breakfast. Breakfast includes traditional dishes like breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, huevos con machaca, and enchiladas con huevos. They also have a kids’ breakfast menu.

The bar’s libations focus on tequilas, mescals, and beer collections. Happy Hour is 2 – 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

The Reef

The Reef has seen many changes over the years. It began as the Conga Room restaurant. It’s been reimagined with a tropical theme and Tiki elements. They don’t call it a Tiki bar but instead a tropical libation sanctuary. That’s because Tiki people are very particular about what Tiki is and is not. Either way, it will make you feel like you’re vacationing on some exotic island.

The Reef’s menu features an extensive selection of craft cocktails, beer, and wine made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. It’s island-themed, with cocktails made with rum, including classics like Mai Tai, Blue Hawaiian, and Zombie. They are famous for the Palm Springs Punch, which features Blackheart spiced rum, triple sec, crème de moyaux (almond-flavored liqueur), and pineapple juice. Ask the bartender about unique off-menu cocktails, too.

Happy Hour is Mon. – Thurs., Noon – 5 pm.

The food menu offers a variety of small plates, salads, sandwiches, and flatbreads, perfect for sharing or as a light meal. They also have an extensive menu, including their signature Caliente Burger, made with grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce. Entrees include coconut shrimp, Kalua port with pineapple sauce, fish & chips, and beer battered shrimp.

Artist Gerald Clarke

Teaching us about the Cahuilla Indians

Gerald Clarke is an artist, university professor, cowboy and Cahuilla tribal leader. He is known for deriving inspiration from his heritage and expressing traditional ideas in contemporary forms — mixed-media sculptures, paintings, works on paper, videos, performances and installations — that are at once poetic and politically urgent. Clarke’s artistic output resonates with histories of assemblage, pop, and conceptual art produced by both Native and non-Native artists.

Continuum Basket: Pivat

In this work Clarke arranged crushed aluminum beer and soda cans in traditional motifs inspired by two historic Cahuilla baskets held in the Palm Springs Art Museum’s permanent collection. Clarke honors the legacy and process of Cahuilla basket makers who gather materials from the environment, but injects a contemporary approach by utilizing man-made cans that litter the same lands today.

Immersion

One of his most notable recent works is the art installation called Immersion as part of Desert X 2023. The goal of Immersion is to create a space for contemplation and reflection on the rich history and traditions of the Cahuilla people, as well as to highlight their ongoing presence and contributions to the region. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating indigenous cultures in our society.

gerald clarke immersion desert x

Immersion is an interactive sculpture piece that combines the Cahuilla basketry tradition with the American board game franchise. It is an approximately 100-foot sized basket piece made out of plywood and straw waddles that lays flat against the desert landscape.

Recordings

The basket includes four pathways to the center that are meant to be walked on, each entitled after the four cardinal directions sacred to Cahuilla people. The center  of the basket includes four recordings to listen to and reflect on. Note: These recordings are on Soundcloud and you may be served an ad before the recording.

Alvino – The telling of the Cahuilla Creation story told entirely in the traditional Cahuilla language with no English translation.

Annie – Recording with Annie, Cahuilla Indian tribal elder, sharing some of her stories and the hardships of the tribe.

Bird Dance – One of their important dances is the bird dance, which represents the flight of birds and their connection to the spirit world. Cahuilla bird dance songs are typically accompanied by rhythmic drumming and singing, and feature lively movements that imitate the flapping and soaring of birds. The lyrics of the songs often relate to the natural world and the power of nature. Some examples of Cahuilla bird dance songs include “Kamalak,” “Kukun,” and “Kwok l’uwish.” These songs are still performed today as part of the Cahuilla’s cultural heritage, and are a testament to the enduring legacy of this Native American tribe.

Creation – Telling of the Cahuilla Creation story in English.

Game

As an educator, Clarke understands the role that games can play in leading people to obtaining knowledge that they might have been hesitant to seek on their own. He has created a deck of cards, each with four questions and answers. Each question related to Indigenous people, Native history, and Cahuilla Culture. Question topics range from Indigenous Chamorro history to the meaning of the word “Cahuilla.”  Test your knowledge.

Uptown Vintage Shopping

As the epicenter of all things mid-century modern, Palm Springs is the go-to for vintage shopping. The quality and selection are unbeatable—and believe me, I know. Whether you’re after that perfect Eames chair, a sequined ‘60s ball gown, or love the thrill of the hunt, Uptown vintage shopping in Palm Springs has it all.

Where to begin?  The Uptown Design District, along North Palm Canyon Drive, is one of the city’s vintage hot spots. Dozens of consignment, resale, and antique boutiques line the avenue. And it’s not just the items inside that are retro – many are housed in cool vintage buildings.

A La Mod is where I often begin, admiring (and sometimes buying) its collection of exquisite and hard-to-find, mid-century furnishings. From pristine burlwood side tables and polished brass lamps by Maurizio Tempestini to oil paintings and a killer steel, leather, and brass platform bed by Paolo Piva, this shop is a joy to visit.

Nearby, The Frippery brims with hip must-have retro wear for women and men. Jewelry sparkles at the counter, and the racks are filled with mod resort wear, Audrey Hepburn-like sheaths, pretty-in-pink cocktail dresses, bow ties, plaid sport coats, handbags, and shoes.

If you’re into mid-century glass, Bon Vivant is pure heaven. Its glass bottle collection is one of the best and largest, along with mid-century pottery, lamps, and collectibles. Iconic Atomic is great for vintage clothing—think Jackie O-style sheathes, dusters, and equally cool menswear—plus shell phones, bubble chairs, and other memorable accessories.

The Antique Collective is a classic antique shop with vintage items from the 18th to the mid-twentieth centuries. You’ll find it all: chandeliers, Royal Doulton figurines, retro Russel Wright dinnerware, ceramic owls by Howard Pierce, bar stools, rugs, sculptures, and knickknacks.

The Shops at Thirteen Forty-Five is a great little complex of 13 chic shops inside a 1955 building designed by iconic mid-century architect E. Stewart Williams. “Interior decorators are our most frequent customers,” says complex co-owner Brandon Hoskins, an interior designer.

Uptown Vintage Shopping Collections

Gypsyland is as fun as its name implies. It’s packed with vintage kitsch, quality finds, furnishings, art, and a drop-dead collection of big, fluffy ‘50s cocktail dresses. Co-owner Wendy Woodward confessed that entertainment industry pros often shop here for fun cocktail wear during awards season.

Across the street, the granddaddy of Palm Springs’ vintage shops – Modern Way – is as compelling today for its indoor and outdoor furniture from the ‘50s to ‘70s as when it opened more than 20 years ago. Fabulous lawn chairs, ceramic-topped end tables, ‘50s bamboo bars, and a space age-style Warren Platner sofa are just the beginning. The new “Listening Room” displays vintage hi-fi and stereos.

But wait, there’s more…

They have 1,100 square feet of carefully and personally chosen top-quality classic modern furnishings, lighting, and accessories.
