How Walt Disney Enchanted Palm Springs

The Wonderful World of Palm Springs

By Randy Garner

In 1938, Walt Disney came for a week’s stay and fell in love with Palm Springs and the landscape. They were drawn to the area’s warm climate and natural beauty, seeking respite from their busy lives in Los Angeles.

He loved western themes and riding horses, which was very popular in Palm Springs then. The Desert Rancheros organization had just formed, and Walt joined. They were a group dedicated to riding horses and organized an annual three-day ride. They would ride for 15 miles a day, then set up camp and enjoy a nice family-style dinner from the chuck wagon.

Among Disney’s riding partners was none other than Frank Bogert, an actor, author, and rodeo announcer. He was also the four-time Mayor of Palm Springs who served consecutive terms: from 1958 to 1966 and two more from 1982 to 1990.

Smoke Tree Ranch

Disney became a member of Smoke Tree Ranch in 1946. Smoke Tree began in 1936 with a vision to be a place free from pressures where families could just come, relax, and enjoy the desert. Life was simple on purpose, and there was no effort to impress. Western singers and musicians who lived at the Ranch offered entertainment, and cowboys joined in the square dancing.

Disney and his wife Lillian bought their first plot of land for their new Palm Springs home in 1948 at Smoke Tree Ranch. They moved into the home in 1951 according to architect William F. Cody who designed the low, modern desert dwelling. The house exterior was redwood with large expanses of glass and a heavy shake roof. This became a beloved getaway spot for Disney and his family, where they could relax, entertain friends, and escape the demands of running their burgeoning entertainment empire.

Although Disney enjoyed several years at this residence, it was time to raise funds for his new venture, Disneyland. As part of pursuing his dream, he and his brother Roy sold most of their assets in 1954 to secure the land and begin construction. Disney was also friends with the owner of the L’Horizon Hotel in Palm Springs, Jack Wrather. They collaborated to open the Disneyland Hotel.

Palm Springs played a crucial role in Disney’s vision for Disneyland, the iconic theme park that opened in 1955. It is said that Disney often brainstormed ideas and concepts for the park while relaxing at Smoke Tree Ranch. The tranquil surroundings and laid-back atmosphere of Palm Springs likely influenced Disney’s desire to create a magical place where people could escape reality and immerse themselves in a world of fun and fantasy.

Disney returned to Smoke Tree Ranch in 1957, building a second vacation residence there flush with the profits gained from Disneyland’s phenomenal success.

Photos of Disney at ease in Palm Springs decorate the walls. He was proud to be a member of Smoke Tree and he often included the logo on his ties, a secret most T.V. viewers would not know.

Moorten Botanical Gardens

Clark Moorten, the rugged, engaging second-generation host, oversees the Palm Springs garden. Clark’s parents, Chester “Cactus Slim” Moorten and his wife, Patricia, created it. Cactus Slim was an original Keystone Cop and a stand-in for Howard Hughes. He developed tuberculosis on a film set and eventually ended up in Palm Springs for the warm and dry climate that was beneficial for the lungs in 1938. They bought the property, which became Moorten Botanical Garden, from renowned nature and desert photographer Stephen Willard.

Together the couple expanded Chester’s business to include landscape design and were soon hired by such luminaries as Walt Disney, Red Skelton, Jimmy Van Heusen, Frank Sinatra, and Bing Crosby to create backyards at their desert homes. Walt tapped the duo to curate the foliage for Frontierland at his soon-to-be-built Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA.

The Palm Springs Desert Museum

The Palm Springs Desert Museum added Disney to the Advisory Board. His work with the Desert Museum partially inspired his movie, “The Living Desert.”  The movie, which won an Oscar® in 1954 for Best Documentary, showcased the creatures and beauty of the desert.

Below is a typed letter signed (“Walt Disney”), to Allen Smith of the Palm Springs Desert Museum. “I have just looked at our picture The Story of the Desert, which I had intended bringing down this week-end, but it still needs additional editing and until this is done I would rather not show it. I know you want to see this picture and I will bring it down for you as soon as it’s in good shape — most likely this will be shortly after the first of the year.” In this very significant letter, Disney is just finishing The Living Desert, which was released in 1953, the first of his “True-Life Adventure” series. The series of features ran through 1960 and earned the prolific and innovative artist some 29 Oscars.

Disney letter sent to the Desert Museum

The Palm Springs Desert Museum was at the location next to the Welwood Murray Memorial Library. The new art museum was built on Museum Way and the name later changed to the Palm Springs Art Museum. Founded in 1938, it has a rich history and has become a prominent center for arts, culture, and education in the region.

The museum’s initial focus was on the natural sciences, featuring exhibits on the local desert ecosystem, geology, and Native American artifacts. Over time, the museum expanded its collection to include fine art, contemporary art, photography, sculpture, and more.

Indian Canyons Golf Resort

Disney joined the list of A-list membership to Indian Canyons Golf Resort along with Clark Gable, Bob Hope, and Frank Sinatra. His greatest contribution to the course’s legendary fairways is the massive green-patina copper lily pad fountain that he donated to the course in 1962.

While receiving golf lessons, Disney learned the course was considering adding a water feature into the lake between holes No. 9 and 18. He just happened to be having nine water fountains designed in Europe. A few weeks later, one of those fountains showed up at the club in a big crate.

Even after Disney’s passing in 1966, his connection to Palm Springs continued. Many Disney executives and animators, inspired by their founder, also made Palm Springs their home or vacation spot. Disney’s influence and lasting legacy endure to this day.

History of Smoke Tree Stables

Smoke Tree Stables is said to have been formed in 1927. The adjacent Smoke Tree Ranch was one of the few subdivisions developed in Palm Springs during the Great Depression. Originally built as a dude ranch, the “guest ranch” was started in 1930 by L. Mac Blankenhorn and named after the characteristic smoke trees.

F. Markham

In the 1930s, Fred and Maziebelle Markham regularly stayed at the Desert Inn from Pasadena for the healthful benefits it provided to their young asthmatic son, Charlie. Maziebelle fell in love with the desert. After many subsequent visits “out of town” at Smoke Tree Ranch, the Markhams bought the entirety of the ranch in 1936 (under the name Mardo Corporation, later changed to Smoke Tree Ranch Properties) and proceeded to expand it and sell home lots to their friends.

In 1945, the Markhams sold the entire Ranch operation to the Colony to retain ownership in their homes and home sites.

G. Rasmussen

The Stables were annexed from the Ranch, and George Rasmussen became the owner in 1946. He had been active in Palm Springs horse events since the early 1930s, including several rodeos. George was one of the original members of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s posse. Later, he was involved in the Palm Spring Mounted Police posse, which held its first drill at Smoke Tree Stables in 1950.

Johnson Family

The Burro Train in Palm Springs, established in 1948, was located at the northwest corner of South Palm Canyon Drive and Mesquite Avenue. One of the rides was a 2-hour excursion to the falls in Tahquitz Canyon. Ken Johnson became interested in the Burro Train while recovering from a about with pneumonia, which antibiotics could not cure. He decided to recuperate in the desert and rode with his wife, Eva, up into Tahquitz Canyon on the Burro Train. He would later purchase it and increase the burros from 14 to 30.

The Palm Springs Burro Train was one of the first known in the US. The grandchildren of Walter Knott – founder of Knott’s Berry Farm – were frequent riders of the Burro Train during their visits to Palm Springs.

After Ken Johnson acquired the Burro Train, he also took over the operation of Smoke Tree Stables.  Smoke Tree Stables is still owned and operated by the Johnson family today.

Meet Stacy Johnson, Keeper of Smoke Tree Stables

“Horses tend to mirror our behaviors,” explains Stacey Johnson, proprietor of Smoke Tree Stables. “So people get to experience their behaviors in real-time. And it also offers them an opportunity to sort of reflect and then maybe make some adjustments they notice while working with the horses.”

Horseback riding is synonymous with wellness. In addition to encouraging physical activity, equestrianism helps people commune with nature courtesy of their hoofed chauffeur. Palm Springs is also indelibly linked with a quest for health and happiness. It has been a wellness retreat for centuries, and Smoke Tree Stables has been a big part of our healing history.

“My husband’s family has owned the business since the 1940s, and it’s been in our family ever since. So there’s a long history of that sort of Western way of life in Palm Springs. We see generation after generation of people who come to visit and then bring their children and then bring their grandchildren. It’s pretty fantastic.”

Murray Canyon Haul Ride

“We have a couple of different programs for the general public. Our most popular ride is our Murray Canyon haul ride, and that’s h-a-u-l. And that’s where we trailer the horses up into the Andreas Canyon.  It’s part of the Agua Caliente Indian Canyons. Most of Murray Canyon is only accessible by foot or horse. We ride from Andreas Canyon up over Murray Peak and drop back into the canyons. So, in terms of scenery, it’s spectacular. They ride through native palm groves. They ride through and along streambeds. The ride itself is about an hour and 40 minutes.”

Murray Canyon is also known for its cultural significance. It is home to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, who have inhabited the region for centuries. The canyon contains remnants of ancient settlements and rock art, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the indigenous people. Visiting Murray Canyon is not only an opportunity to connect with nature but also a chance to appreciate the cultural heritage of the area.

As you traverse winding trails surrounded by towering palm trees and awe-inspiring desert landscapes, you’ll witness the natural beauty that makes Palm Springs so enchanting. Explore the rugged terrain of Murray Canyon on horseback. This trail takes you through dramatic rock formations and vibrant flora and offers glimpses of wildlife in their natural habitat. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of the desert while discovering its hidden treasures.

Agua Caliente Cultural Museum

Connecting the Past and Present

A visit to the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum begins with the words, “Welcome to Our Home.” Almost 48,000 square feet of permanent exhibit space on a 5.8-acre complex is dedicated to the Tribe’s collection of art and artifacts and a 360-degree animation theater telling the creation story.

The Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza includes the Cultural Museum with an education garden and The Spa at Sec He, a state-of-the-art spa fed by the ancient Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring. It is joined by the Gathering Plaza and Oasis Trail, which is activated with flowing water, Washingtonia filifera palm trees (the only palm tree native to the California desert), and stunning rock formations that capture the essence of the Indian Canyons and Tahquitz Canyon, which are the ancestral homes of the Agua Caliente people.

spa at sec he lounge

While the Plaza connects ancient and contemporary life, the Oasis Trail reflects the canyons’ sequestered nature. The water-filled areas provided the Agua Caliente people with cooler living conditions in the hot desert summers.

Setting The Foundation

Your journey will begin with an education of the creation story.

The Cahuilla people share a creation story that began with two nights, representing a man and a woman. With a flash of lighting, twin boys were born. They were alone, so the brothers decided to create companions made people from Earth. The one brother made his people much faster than the other brother did. He could not understand how, so he made the sun in order to see. It would fall to earth, but by the next morning, it would rise again.

When the sun fell, it became dark, so they created the moon. The moon was a woman, bright and beautiful. Her name was the Moon Maiden. To make more light, they blew stars into the sky.

This introductory theater-in-the-round contains crescent-shaped benches for comfortable viewing. Once you have gained this foundational context, you will then embark on a cultural journey through various art forms and narratives.

Agua Caliente Cultural Museum

Cultural Journey

The next exhibit area highlights the Indian Canyons, which are comprised of Indian Canyon, Andreas Canyon, and Palm Canyon. It also includes information on Tahquitz Canyon. and Chino Canyon. In addition to harboring flora and fauna that are historically and culturally significant to the Agua Caliente, these ancestral lands played a direct role in how the Tribe’s clan structure evolved.

From here, you will continue through the gallery, which features many elements of Agua Caliente’s artistic expressions and material culture. This will include ceremonial practices and objects such as baskets and ollas (clay vessels used for seeds, food, and water). Audio and video explain how and why the Agua Caliente changed, adapted, and embraced self-determination. You will also learn the significance behind Séc-he, the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Springs.

By the time you reach the fourth exhibit area, you will have arrived at the most linear part of the permanent gallery, where a visual timeline and digital map table display the Agua Caliente’s focus on the arrival of Euro-American settlers in the 19th century.

The final exhibit area highlights archaeology. This includes many artifacts discovered during construction, such as manos, metates, and projectile points dating back as far as 8,000 years.

Another section of the museum will feature rotating exhibits, classrooms, a meeting space, and a film screening room. Outside is a native plant garden where visitors can learn about traditional sources of food, medicine, and shelter.

The Tribe’s Voice

The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum is the Tribe’s voice. It’s their story, and it’s being told the way they want it said. It focuses on elements that they believe are important. In keeping with this, members’ stories will appear throughout the permanent exhibition.

Before leaving, you will encounter a crescent-shaped room housing five large monitors that feature first-person narratives on video. The person is always a Tribal member talking about who they are and why being a member of the Agua Caliente community is essential.

Architects Who Built Palm Springs: Howard Lapham

Howard Lapham’s Palm Springs Vision

By Kevin Perry & Randy Garner

As part of the collection of architects that helped form the vision of Palm Springs, while lesser-known, Howard Lapham is part of Palm Springs’s architectural history.

He was born in Oklahoma City in 1914 and moved to Palm Springs in 1954. He was a carpenter, draftsman, contractor, land planner, and architect. His offices were at 577 East Sunny Dunes Road.

His son, Lawrence, who would also become a local architect, moved to Palm Springs in 1959. He is best known for the architectural development of the Alan Ladd building.

Over the course of his career, Lapham’s commissions were recognized both locally and nationally. Fortunately, in recent years there has been a burgeoning appreciation of architectural designers like Lapham (Herbert Burns, for one) who were forced to compete professionally with architects like William F. Cody, E. Stewart Williams, Donald Wexler, et al. Despite the stiff competition, architectural designers like Lapham frequently secured commissions, usually by virtue of their own creative designs.

His early works included custom homes in Palm Spring’s Deepwell Estates.

Residence – 1515 S Manzanita

Many of the “starchitects” who helped craft Palm Springs’ signature look were quite active in the Deepwell Estates area. The residences just east of The Curve and just north of Smoke Tree boast a restrained allure that beckoned celebs like Elizabeth Taylor and William Holden. Deepwell’s architectural flair is cohesive yet anything but uniform, a cacophony of muted sophistication at every bespoke turn.

Howard Lapham lent his particular brand of brilliance to the property at 1515 S. Manzanita. The peekaboo rock edifice simultaneously excludes and excites passersby. You want to know more about the splendor simmering just behind those walls. And the zigzag playfulness of the rooftop overhang resembles a lightning bolt when seen from above.

Once inside, guests are treated to a smorgasbord of depth and diversity. Angular interiors give way to the sweeping, curved contours of the outdoor space. A kidney shaped pool dominates the backyard, and quirky landscaping draws your eyes every which way until you’re back inside to marvel at the architecture once more.

1515 South Manzanita Howarrd Lapham

Residence – 650 E. Tachevah

Water features define Howard Lapham’s magnum opus: the Movie Colony mansion perched at 650 East Tachevah. This is located adjacent to Sunrise Park. It was built in 1966 and includes 9 bedrooms and 12 baths. A koi pond greets visitors to the 9,400 square foot estate while a fountain and 50-foot swimming pool etch out the opposite end of the property. There’s also a modest indoor pool for those crisp winter months.

The living room has 13 foot floor to ceiling glass lines the perimeter of Lapham’s midcentury masterpiece, drizzling sunlight on the original terrazzo tiles below. Sliding doors open onto a landscaped garden with views of the surrounding mountains.

Howard Lampham home on Tachevah

Desert Star – 1611 S. Calle Palo Fierro

One of Lapham’s earliest Palm Springs achievements is also one of his most enduring. The Desert Star on South Calle Palo Fierro is a throwback thrill of retro innovation. The canted roofs caress one another as the rugged mountains waltz in the background, as if they are all posing for the perfect pic. Commissioned in 1955 by three couples who wanted to build the ideal resort, the Desert Star consists of a handful of studio apartment style bungalows arranged around a glistening pool.

Fast forward to 2016, when the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation succeeded in designating Lapham’s vanguard vision as a Class 1 Historic Site. But the Desert Star doesn’t merely shimmer in the past; it is currently available to experience firsthand as a vacation rental.

After all, the architecture in Palm Springs isn’t just passively beautiful; it is imminently immersive. You can literally step into history and follow the footsteps of 20th century icons when you cross the thresholds of various Howard Lapham estates. His creativity echoes from the past into a vibrant future.

Debbie Reynolds Residence – 6710 West Stevens Road

This was built by Howard in 1957. It is a spectacular 5,000 square foot home perched above one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in all of Palm Springs. Unfortunately, it was completely reconstructed in 2008 and much of Howard’s work was lost.

Other Notable Lapham Designs

Skylark Hotel – 1466 N. Palm Canyon (1956) – expansion. This has also gone through another recent renovation.

Kelly’s Home Furnishings (1956) – 4525 E Ramon Road.

Tranquilla Villa (1956) – 291 Camino Monte Vista

291 Camino Monte Vista Howard Lapham

Store Building (1958) – 1074 N. Palm Canyon – Now DaVita Dialysis

Palm Springs Greyhound Bus Depot (1959) – 311 N. Indian Ave. – currently vacant.

Rackstrom-Reid Building (1961) – 668 N Palm Canyon.

668 North Palm Canyon Lapham

Palm Springs National Bank (1963) – 441 S. Palm Canyon Drive – with Richard Harrison. This is now a retail space across the street from Johnny Costa’s. The side entrances fronting a spacious parking lot featured a porte coachere, under which patrons were able to do their banking from automobiles without dueling with the sun’s rays. These breezeways remain.

441 South Palm Canyon Howard Lapham

Smoke Tree Village (1965) – Hwy 111 & Sunrise Way – with Richard Harrison. Walt Disney has also submitted plans for this project, but was rejected. The original concept was a farmers market open air style of shopping connected by spacious covered arcades. Once completed, Howard also became the first Vice President.

Commercial Complex (1966) – South Palm Canyon & Sunny Dunes

Orchid Tree Lane Estates (1966) – Alejo & Burton Way

Medical Office Building (1969) – 140 Luring Drive. This is off Tahquitz and now holds an attorney’s office.

140 Luring Drive, Lapham

Palm Springs Fire Station #4 (1971) – Corner of La Verne Way and Marion Way. Although Kaptur has received credit for this project (and renovation), The Desert Sun notes “was designed by Kaptur and Lapham” in an October 28, 1971 article.

Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant (1977) – N. Palm Canyon & Steven Road

Professional Offices (1977) – N Palm Canyon & Indian Avenue, north of Tachevah Drive

Las Palmas Plaza (1977) – across from old El Mirador Hotel.

The Chi Chi Club – 217 N Palm Canyon

Palm Canyon Drive has always been the party pulse of downtown. If you listen closely, you can still hear luminaries like Ella Fitzgerald, Jerry Lewis, Eddie Cantor, Jane Russell, Louis Armstrong, Rudy Vallee and Lena Horne rubbing elbows at a hip hangout known as the Chi Chi (now demolished).

In 1959, Howard Lapham was commissioned to give the nightclub a makeover. He employed saturated palettes such as midnight blue and bruised rose to create a Yucatan tableau. The resulting renovation welcomed Hollywood dignitaries from Jack Warner to Cecil B. DeMille to Howard Hughes (who required special disinfection protocols before his arrival to the Chi Chi).

Chi Chi Howard Lapham

Lapham officially retired in the 1980’s, although he continued to maintain an office in Palm Springs until his death in 2008 at the age of 92.

You can learn more about Howard Lapham and the many other architects that helped shape Palm Spring at Palm Springs Modernism Week October and Palm Springs Modernism Week (February). There are also a number of architecture tours.
