About The Owner of Soukie Modern

Meet Taib Lotfi, the owner of Soukie Modern. He was born and raised in Assoliy village in Morocco. He is of Berber descent from the Idaounidif Tribe. His family split their time between Assoliy and Marrakech. At 14 years old Taib moved to Marrakech where he completed studies in Hotelier Management. After a stint at the iconic El Fenn Hotel, Taib moved on to create his own business, Pot of Rugs.

“Growing up as a Berber in Northern Africa as a part of the Idaounidifi Tribe in Morocco, I sat by as a child and played with fistfuls of textiles as we watched the women from our village weave. I remember that I enjoyed being around them they would ask us to sit with the yarn as they worked,” noted Taib.  In Morocco at the time, only women could become weavers, so Taib was not allowed to learn the trade.

A self-proclaimed rug addict, he collaborates on rug design with weavers in rural Moroccan villages. His passion for vintage and rare Moroccan textiles, weaving, design and culture garnered Pot of Rugs an expansive international following. It was through the popularity of Pot of Rug’s social media that Taib met his co-founder and his brand evolved into Soukie Modern here in Palm Springs.

After 16 years in Marrakesh building his experience in hospitality and design he began to sell rugs. When he moved to California to open Soukie Modern he was finally able to see his obsession with rugs realized. Helping people to source and style traditional and vintage Moroccan Rugs eventually led to his next step of becoming a weaver.

Soukie Modern Workshops

In 2019 Taib imported his family loom that this father made in the 1970’s for his mother. He started to weave, mixing traditional techniques and knots with more modern methods he was learning and that’s when the Berber Weaver collection began.

As clients came through the store and saw weaving in person, requests came in to learn. Eager to share, he worked to set up his first one-on-one lessons and eventual workshops.

One-on-one Sessions

Lessons are available in store, or for those looking to dive in a bit deeper, Taib can be hired to build a loom for your home and you can learn to build your own warps and weave from scratch. Contact Taib to set up an inquiry call and see what would be the best fit for you.

Group Sessions

Looking to host a corporate team building day, bachelor/bachelorette or birthday party? Group Weaving parties are a fun way for groups of 4-15 to bond over a new creative project. These can be hosted here at Soukie Modern on Tuesdays/Wednesdays or off-site any other day of the week. Contact Taib to set up an inquiry call and see what would be the best fit for you
