Artist Tom Burns, owner of Tom Burns Artworks Gallery, was born and raised in the Midwest. From an early age, he has felt the drive to create. He attended college in Texas and graduated with a business degree in Marketing. After working in the corporate world for several years, he returned to school to pursue a career in fine art.
He later moved to California and was inspired by the Bay Area abstract expressionists of the 1950s and 1960s. The complexity of color, shape, and texture with their relationship to each other gives his painting movement and emotion.
Artist Tom Burns is really a series of paintings over each other. There could be three to four completed layered paintings, each leaving a little gem for the previous painting that gives history to the final work. He then builds up the paint layers in selected areas while scraping off other areas. This gives each artwork depth and movement. Even the decision that a painting is finished is an instinctive, intuitive moment.
Every painting is an emotional personal journey.
In 2004, Tom created ARTWORKS Magazine and served as founder and publisher. ARTWORKS is dedicated to promoting the art and artists of the West Coast. With so much attention given to artists working in New York, Tom felt that the West Coast art scene was often overlooked.
In 2009, Tom Burns also founded the Carmel International Film Festival.
In 2017 major life changes brought Tom to Palm Springs, where he now resides. Painting and creating art remains at the core of his soul.
