Orbit In stands as a testament to the timeless allure of midcentury modern architecture. This stunning property, with its sleek lines, open spaces, and vibrant colors, captures the essence of the desert oasis while paying homage to its rich architectural history.
Built in classic midcentury modern courtyard style by Herbert Burns, the builder/designer who brought the ultra-modern apartment-hotel style to Palm Springs, the Orbit In started out as the Village Manor in 1957. A top local architectural firm restored it and retained its original features, including built-in wall clocks in the rooms and Vintage Dwyer metal kitchens. Even the furnishings are authentic collectibles, including many vintage bedside lamps.
The Frey Lounge, Room 108, honors Palm Springs architect Albert Frey – one of nine rooms to choose from. The outdoor shower on the rear patio gives a majestic view of Frey House II, while photos by architectural photographer Julius Shulman hang on the interior walls.
The Orbit In was Shulman’s preferred place to stay in Palm Springs.
Staying at the Orbit In provides more than a place to rest your head. It offers a journey back in time, immersing you in the design ethos of the midcentury era. The interior exudes understated luxury, with clean lines, iconic furniture pieces, and carefully curated décor reminiscent of the period’s design sensibilities.
Fly yourself to the moon in the Atomic Paradise room (#105), a space-age-inspired paradise complete with Paulin’s “orange slice” chair and a retro-fabulous sofa. Zip into the classic kitchen (it’s original) for an atomic cocktail, and enjoy your very own Palm Springs weekend, no matter what day of the week it is!
Or ease into an Eames state of mind in the Eames Studio. This spacious, light studio features the art and furnishings of Charles & Ray Eames. Be mesmerized by their perspective on universal scale and design as you watch Powers of Ten while sipping your drink in a vintage fiberglass armchair.
Beyond its architectural significance, the Orbit In also holds an intriguing history. Over the years, the property has played host to a multitude of notable guests, including Hollywood celebrities, musicians, and artists. As you walk through the property, you can’t help but imagine the conversations and creative energy that once filled its rooms.
Located in the desirable Tennis neighborhood close to downtown, the Orbit In offers stunning mountain views, a sparkling swimming pool, and ample outdoor spaces to relax and soak up the California sun. It’s the perfect oasis for those seeking a unique vacation experience that seamlessly blends architectural fascination with the natural beauty of Palm Springs.
