Monkey Tree History

The Monkey Tree Hotel in Palm Springs has a fascinating history. It has often been attributed to Albert Frey’s 1960 design of the building. Extensive research in the Frey archives at the Palm Springs Art Museum and the University of California, Santa Barbara, didn’t mention the Monkey Tree Hotel. Colleen Carol Crist designed the hotel. It is one of the few midcentury buildings in Palm Springs designed by a woman. Although Crist never received AIA status, she worked as a draftswoman for local architects such as William Cody and E. Stewart Williams. She also helped design the upper station of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

The hotel underwent renovations. Its name was changed to the Monkey Tree Hotel, paying homage to the era when a troupe of monkeys inhabited the property’s surrounding area. The renovations aimed to preserve the original midcentury modern aesthetic while adding modern amenities and comforts.
