The Palm Springs Black History Tour highlights the remarkable contributions of Black pioneers who shaped the city despite the challenges of earlier times.
The journey begins on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation at Section 14, where African-Americans started to settle in the 1940s.
Explore the works of renowned architect Paul Williams and learn about land developer and city planner Lawrence Crossley, who arrived in the 1920s and transformed the city’s landscape when African-Americans were barred from owning property. Visit landmarks like Crossley Corners and the neighborhood that now bears his name.
The tour concludes at Desert Highland Gateway Estates, the most significant predominantly Black neighborhood, which has been home to community activists and internationally recognized athletes. You’ll also see several faith-based institutions and end at the James O. Jessie Unity Center, a vibrant cultural and recreational hub within the Desert Highland Gateway Community.
