Selector of the week: VICTOR RODRIGUEZ
An Influential DJ and promoter since before he was legally allowed to enter clubs, Victor Rodriguez has been a part of building the LA club scene since the Mid/Late 80’s and early 90’s through his association with such clubs as White Chocolate, Plastic Passion, and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. In the late 90’s he teamed up with Billy Erb in bringing the legendary NYC party “Beige” to Los Angeles. It was a huge success that lasted 11 years and set a new standard in LA nightlife. Through his collaboration with DJ Chris Bowen in 2008 under the Critter Control collective, they helped established a re-birth of downtown queer club culture with their party “Shits & Giggles”, and later with Cub Scout and and Bears in Space. They regularly showcase such talents as DJ Harvey, Eric Duncun, Lovefingers & Heidi Lawden, Justin Van Der Vluegan, Andy Butler, Pat Mahoney, Horse Meat Disco, Tim Sweeney, Honcho, Optimo, Honey Sound System, Discodromo, among many others. He is also a partner and booker in the queer underground collective “The Party by Ostbahnhof”, which started in 2016 and is one of the largest queer warehouse party in LA.
Victor Rodriguez has been collecting records since he was 7 with a collection well past 15 000. He has recently shared billing with the likes of Lauer, Zombies in Miami, Intergalictic Gary, Hugo Capablanca, Blessed Madonna and Carry Nation, playing across Europe, Canada, Mexico, South America and the US. He’s also played International Music Festival such as Glastonbury, Love International, Desert Hearts and Secret Project. His current monthly residences include, Cub Scout, Bears in Space, Ostbahnhof , Por Detroit LA. Most recently along with his husband, Jerren Werbes (Perfect Lovers) has started the music label “Muy Muy Limited” showcasing such artist as, Nikki Nair, DJs Parejas, Don Esquivel, as well as his own tracks done with Perfect Lovers. They also started the Queer Music Festival “Somos” and the Queer Camp Out “Camp Caftan. His private clients events have included such personalities as Elton John, Anna Wintour, Madonna, Donatella Versace, and once had Grace Jones request a private after-hours set for her and her entourage. And then there was the time he shared the decks with Prince….
His versatility and ability to set mood with his wide collection of Disco, House, Techno, Soul, and rare vinyl only releases, has proved his ability to remain relevant in our ever-changing climate.
