About Event

In celebration of the 100th Birthday of the legendary Jose Sarria, the Jose Sarria Foundation is hosting a pop up museum of his historic life. Jose is often referred to as the Rosa Parks of the lgbtq+ civil rights movement and as the first person to proclaim a Gay Community and say Gay is Good. He famously stated “United we stand, divided they catch us one by one.”

His activism began upon his return from military service in Europe during WW2 and as a popular performer at the Black Cat Cafe, gave him a platform for change. He was the first out candidate for public office when he ran in 1961 and a driving force behind the landmark 1951 CA supreme court decision Stoumen vs Reilly that won the right to public assembly for lgbtq+ citizens in CA. Pride in CA can be traced back to this landmark decision and thanks to Jose Sarria and Sol Stoumen for pressing the case.

Before Stonewall and before Harvey Milk, there was Jose Sarria!
